To Whom It May Concern:
I grew up on a farm in an environment where, if something was going to happen, you needed to make it happen. I was operating farm equipment independently by the age of 10 and by the age of 13 was supervising others (juveniles and adults) as was necessitated by my father’s untimely passing.
I grew up faster than most and, in the process, realized that I had the ability to ‘figure things out’ including expediting projects and optimizing manpower. Even working as a tradesman, a new person on the job would assume that I was a supervisor (to which my response was, “I’m nobody’s boss.”).
Nevertheless, I always tended to gravitate toward supervision, sometimes by choice and sometimes out of necessity (somebody’s gotta do it). I thrive on accomplishment though I’m not a heavy taskmaster. I have had good success leading by example and developing loyalty as opposed to fear. I’m not afraid to make my expectations known while still affording the respect due the employee.
I’m not afraid to operate a computer or an excavator as the job demands. I believe in doing things right and making sure things are done right. If I have the opportunity to work for a company I can represent with a clear conscience, I will do everything in my power to enhance their reputation and maximize their margin. On the other hand, if it is not a reputable company, my tenure will be brief. From my teenage years to now, there is not one employer I have had that I would feel uncomfortable standing in front of or, for that matter, any employee or coworker.
I have completed some impressive projects as part of some excellent teams. I look forward to future challenges.
Sincerely,
Michael D. Shaffer
