Education

2020: BSc (Hons) Genetics, University of Pretoria (Cum Laude)

• Research project: “In silico analysis of plant plastid RNA-binding protein evolution and function” which was mentored by Professor Eshchar Mizrachi and Dr Desré Pinard. The project utilized a variety of online programs as well as the use of linux coding language. I am professionally proficient in both Microsoft Word and Excel.

• The BSc (Hons) Genetics degree includes courses in scientific writing, unlocking the literature and article discussion all of which I received distinctions for.

• The degree also includes an MLB course in which students have to identify gaps in literature and propose a research project based on the gaps they identified. I received a distinction (75%) for this course.

• A Joint Techniques Course was also completed at the beginning of the degree in which time was spent mastering many laboratory techniques. This course also included a complete writeup of laboratory results for which I obtained a distinction (75.39%).

2017-2019: BSc Human Genetics, University of Pretoria

• I completed my degree as a dual major track in genetics and physiology.

• I was invited to join the International Golden Key Honours Society for my second year of study in which I had an average of 74.92%.

• In my Final year of study, I received 5 distinctions, one B symbol and two C symbols

• The three years of undergraduate studies taught me how to synthesize large volumes of work and create a large and cohesive picture of all the information. 2016: National Senior Certificate: (Independent Examination Board), Helpmekaar Kollege

Skills

• Languages: Fluent in Afrikaans (home language) and professionally proficient in English

• Programming languages: Semi-proficient in Linux coding. 3

• First aid experience: I have done multiple first aid courses and renewed my level 1 certificate in 2019.

• Laboratory proficient: I completed a joint techniques course at the University of Pretoria in January 2020. The course aims to learn pupils to be proficient in the laboratory and perform a range of laboratory techniques.

• Highly proficient time management: I am very proficient for managing time and ensuring that assignments/deliverables are always finished on time with the highest quality possible.

• I completed an online course presented by Wellcome Genome Campus Advanced Courses and Scientific Conferences. The course that I completed

“What is Genetic Counselling?” focussed on important principles like empathy, unrestricted positive regard and congruence. The course also included case studies of patients with Cystic Fibrosis, Huntington’s disease and breast cancer and how a genetic counsellor would go about helping these individuals.

Interests/ Involvements

• Science

In my free time, I enjoy reading about science and new advances. I especially enjoy reading about advances in health sciences as the human body and how it works has always fascinated me.

• Golf

I have been an avid golfer for the last 10 years. I have played in multiple tournaments and have played on both junior and senior league teams for my home club (Modderfontein Golf Club)

• Fitness

I have always placed a high value on fitness and being healthy. I am also an avid runner. I participated in both athletics and cross-country in high school. Although I do not compete anymore, I still go for daily runs to ensure that I remain fit and healthy.
