Paraprofessional educator, alternatively known as a para, para-pro, paraeducator, instructional assistant, educational assistant, teacher’s aide or classroom assistant, is a teaching-related position within a school generally responsible for specialized or concentrated assistance for students in elementary. Through RCM I am presently in a 40 hour certified course learning Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) skills that can change behaviors and teach applicable skills. What I have learnt through experience is Applied Behavioral Analysis is a system of autism treatments based on the behaviorist theories, and that all behaviors are acquired through conditioning. In other words the desired behaviors can be taught through a system of rewards and consequences. The course I am presently enrolled in by RCM teaches me that a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) is a paraprofessional practicing under the supervision of a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) or Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA). In learning that a RBT’s primary role is to be responsible in implementing treatment plans develop by the supervisor. RCM is assisting me in furthering my education into one of these professional skills.
