EXPERIENCE
MaineHealth Care at Home
RN Nurse Case Manager August 4, 2011 - March 30, 2016 Nurse Manager Sussman House April 1, 2016 - November 30, 2019
Staff Nurse December 1, 2019 - present
I began as a Nurse Case Manager with the home hospice and palliative care team. At that point the agency was known as KNO-WAL-LIN. At a later merger it became known as MaineHealth Care at Home. I learned quickly and mastered the job of case managing home hospice and palliative care patients. Early in my employment there I was seen as having strong clinical and assessment skills. As a case manager, I served as the hub of all care provided for my patients. It was my responsibility to keep abreast of all changes made by multiple specialty providers and collaborate with all parties within our agency and those involved in every aspect of the patient care outside of our agency to ensure the best possible care.
After nearly five years in this role, I took a position as the Nurse Manager of the Sussman House inpatient hospice facility. Thirty days after accepting that position, the agency underwent a substantial merger. Six months following that we went live with a new software provider. I was successful in ushering the facility through all of these changes. I was instrumental in co-creating the software that was necessary to meet regulatory requirements for an inpatient hospice facility. The software provider had never built software for a facility with the unique needs that we had. I took on the responsibility of educating the facility staff to assume responsibility for triaging all incoming hospice calls for our home hospice team. I participated in the process of triaging calls and was an on-call resource for the staff if they ran into anything that they were unsure of how to manage. I found myself responsible for running a hospice facility charged with managing acute symptoms at end of life in the midst of a two-year national parenteral opiate shortage. I successfully navigated the storm and came through with a new confidence in my abilities as a clinician and a leader. Finally, the waters were still and I found myself grumbling with corporate entities about securing office supplies etc... It didn’t take long to fall out of love with the mundane corporate duties that remained after all of the critical problem solving that had filled the previous three plus years of my working days.
On December 1, 2019 I returned to full time direct patient care at the Sussman House.
EXPERIENCE
Quarry Hill
RN Charge Nurse Skilled Care and Long-Term Care August 1, 2009 – July 29, 2011
This position was a typical charge nurse position within a facility that was dually certified for Skilled Care and LTC. Duties included assessment and advocating of patient rights and needs, developing and overseeing care plans, management of medications and treatments within Medicare and Medicaid regulations. The major accomplishments during this time in my life were primarily personal in nature.
EXPERIENCE
Correctional Medical Services August 2001-July 2009
I got my start in correctional medicine at the Maine State Prison when it was still in Thomaston, Maine. Six months into my employment there was a move into Thomaston where the “Super Max” had been expanded to accommodate medium and close custody inmates. The inmate population more than doubled as did the medical staff. As I transitioned from the night shift to the day shift following the move the prison was seeking accreditation. I transitioned into a role that assisted the current HSA in preparing for the accreditation of the medical department.
Following the accreditation process, the majority of my work occurred in the clinic and infirmary. I was proficient in all aspects of job performance in those areas.
I was privileged to indulge my love of teaching and trained correctional staff in basic medical. I also trained all correctional staff and the inmate population in bloodborne pathogens and infectious disease.
I ran the flu shot clinics for the inmate population as well as the Hepatitis vaccination program for new correctional staff.
EDUCATION
In May of 2019 I secured my BSN through the online program at Husson University in Bangor, Maine. I graduated with a 3.84 GPA and accepted an invitation to join the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society. During my time at Husson I was on a fast track program that allowed me to work simultaneously on my Bachelor Degree and on my Masters Degree. With any course content that would need to be repeated for the Master’s Degree at a more in-depth level, I was permitted to complete the Master’s Degree course. Therefore, I have completed some work toward that degree as well.
I obtained my Associate Degree in Nursing in May of 1998 from the University of Maine at Augusta.
