Performed duties of Cardiovascular PA/First Assist/Perfusionist for Pre-operative, Operative and Post-operative phases of Cardiopulmonary Bypass (CPB) for open heart surgery.
Preparation included pre-operative safety inspections, maintenance checks, and the safe operation of the Heart Lung Machines (HLM), Intra-Aortic Balloon Pumps (IABP), and other related extracorporeal apparatus.
Operated such machines, pumps, and apparatus under proper aseptic techniques appropriate to institute and maintain total body perfusion of the patient during extracorporeal circulation.
Maintained constant surveillance of such machines, pumps, and apparatus in relation to the physical and chemical changes produced in the patient by obtaining blood samples during the appropriate phase of perfusion for the purpose of making pH, pCO2, pO2 and acid-base equilibrium determinations and other such appropriate chemical tests during the procedure.
Administered blood, crystalloid cardioplegia solutions, and appropriate medications via the HLM as directed by the attending Surgeon.
Served as First Surgical Assistant when called upon, and Saphenous vein harvester, and assisted with inpatient pre-op and post-op care.
Evaluated and treated post-op heart and lung patients in follow-up clinics.
Prescribed courses of treatment and medication when required.
Maintained all appropriate documents pertaining to the patient from the pre-operative phase through the end of the post-operative phase of the procedure.
