My employment began in the Customer Service Department as a Review Assistant 1. My daily duties consisted of taking incoming calls from patients, doctor’s offices and/or hospitals who wanted to obtain pre-certification for policy holders of our clients. I was offered the opportunity for advancement and I accepted the position and became a mentor, within this position I was responsible for 6 employees until the call center shut down at 7pm. I was also required to handle all the call that the RA1 needed assistance with to ensure the caller received a satisfactory outcome. I was also required to assist with stats on employees and entering numerous webs with clinical information which needed cases started to progress within our process of medical reviews. In January 2006, I was again shown another chance for advancement and began downstairs in the Appeals Department as an Administrative Assistant. This position required me to set meetings and take meeting minutes, also ensuring that the doctors and nurses licenses were current, plus keeping up with the calendar to show the availability of the physician reviewers to those who need them. My duties also included answering multiple phone lines and directing the calls/callers to the appropriate areas. Scanning of medical records, photos and confidential documents and working the letter distributing machine. I also found other ways within this position to save the department money and time re: UPS packages and covering for other staff when quested to do so and anything else the managers needed help with. With this position came more responsibility such as carrying a pager 24/7, should one of the other employees in my direct area not be able to work due to illness, emergency or any other issue, I would step in and fill that void even if it meant working double or triple shifts to have accurate coverage.. I also learned to so specific and non-specific testing for urinalysis and the responsibility of caring for pressure sores for patients that were in bed for prolonged periods of time along with many other testing procedures. In this course I was the clerical person for the nurses, I would take the doctors’ orders and make sure the tests, diets, medications and or therapies for that particular patient is ordered and the chart would then be place where the nurse could sign off that everything had been ordered and completed, this was a very complex position since the slightest mistake could result in a tragedy for a patient should the wrong medication end up on the wrong patients chart.
