Personal Bio Rough Draft
If you've gotten this far, you're probably wondering a little more about me. My name is Katherine Saylor, but most people call me Katie. I was born in a small Maryland town called Boonsboro, and I went to high school in Adams County, PA, not far from the Gettysburg Civil-War battlefield. I'm now 21 years-old and I live in State College, PA where I've been studying at Penn State University since Fall 2017. I'm currently a senior at Penn State studying psychology and public relations— I'm proud to say that as of May 2021, I will be a college graduate with two BA degrees.
Growing up, I was the type to finish my classwork quickly just so I could get back to the book I was reading. I was (and still am) both a perfectionist and a daydreamer. Throughout high school, I was a classic overachiever— Student Council Member, Varsity Cheerleading Captain, Class Secretary, National Honor Society VP— the list goes on. As I transitioned to college, I decided that instead of doing a little bit of everything, I would pick one thing to put my everything into. As a freshman, I quickly chose my focus when I joined a fundraising organization called Eclipse.
Eclipse is a special-interest organization at Penn State with a sole-purpose of raising money for Penn State's THON— the world's largest student-run philanthropy dedicated to enhancing the lives of children and families impacted by childhood cancer. The people and morale of Eclipse were special to me, and after being a member for only one month, I told the president at the time, "I'm gonna be on the executive board." A few months later, I did just that when I became the travel-fundraising chair of Eclipse. Long story short, myself and other board members took Eclipse, the newest and smallest special-interest organization at Penn State, and made it the largest, most popular, and most successful in less than 3 years.
Although my academic and extracurricular obligations minimized my free-time in university, I have found time to develop a love for travel— In summer of 2019, I spent a month in Costa Rica volunteering at an animal refuge center, and it was the most eye-opening and liberating experience of my life.
As you can imagine, 2020 limited my travel plans, but it allowed me to focus on personal and professional growth. During the summer of 2020, I worked full-time (remotely) as a marketing associate at the Institute for Organizational Mindfulness (IOM), a startup nonprofit association. As a long-time advocate for mindfulness, the experience with IOM made me even more passionate about the benefits of the practice; I was also enlightened at the concept of integrating those benefits into the professional world. .
Since my internship came to a close and my senior year began, I have been continuing my journey of personal and professional development. I currently work with psychologist and professor, Dr. Michelle Yarwood as a teaching assistant for her class on the psychology of emotion. As I finish my coursework here at Penn State, I am also working on my next step— Project Runaway! It might sound silly, but Project Runaway is what my boyfriend and I came up with to describe our goal— creating our very own tiny home on wheels! With the help of our family, we plan to be on the road by fall 2021!
As you can see, I'm a little all over the place. However, what I lack in brevity and uniformity, I make up for in heart, determination, knowledge and passion. One thing about me that people who know me all agree on is that I don't let anything stop me from achieving success. My life motto is, "Don't just survive, thrive."
