CAREER AND EXPERIENCE OVERVIEW

Products overview and History:

Originally FlexGen was developed by a South African company called Easirun International. FlexGen is a COBOL rapid application development environment (RADE), i.e., it generates COBOL code (refer to several attached articles on the history and use of COBOL). It was developed to run with 3 types of COBOL (AcuCobol, RM/COBOL and Micro Focus Cobol), which in turn lead Easirun to be sole or main distributors for these 3 products in South Africa. Easirun also opened a Germany (Easirun Europa), Australia (Easirun Australia), and US (SINC INC.) based company to sell and support FlexGen internationally. Easirun South Africa was later acquired by UCS Group. The FlexGen product was then bought by Transoft in the UK (now called Advanced). Advanced also have a USA branch that support FlexGen and other Cobol and modernization tools.

Personal Career Path (1990-2021):

i) I was trained on the FlexGen product in 1990, refer to certificates (FlexGenDevCeritificates.pdf). ii) Initial experience was as a developer for a software house (Total Computer Services) using FlexGen, RM/Cobol, RM/Panels, and MuSQLe report writer; to develop customized software systems for several clients

Future Career Plans:

As a professional COBOL specialist with a passion for COBOL, my focus remains all things COBOL. I have learnt other languages and products (visual basic, java and python) but the COBOL critical skills shortage has lead me to remain in the COBOL development environment and use my vast experience and knowledge to improve or maintain legacy systems, as well as providing and supporting modernization tools. Having had training on the Veryant COBOL products (isCOBOL) and extensive training and experience on Advanced COBOL products (FlexGen and USQL); I am in the unique position to offer consulting and development services in both modernization and migration. Most COBOL programmers having either; experience in mainframe COBOL or pc- based COBOL, but rarely both, I am experienced in both. I also have over a decade’s experience in training COBOL developers on development and modernization products. With both development and training experience, I am in the unique position to not only assist with development but also training developers. Veryant’s isCOBOL is a unique product (Java COBOL), and relatively new to the USA; having been trained on this product I am the preferred resource for Sanford to deliver this to the American markets, as well as upskill technical sales and development resources Sanford will appoint in the USA (for both Sanford and Client employees). Sanford International LLC’s business plan and growth projections include the training of additional resources (for both Sanford and their clients), as the client base and need to support and maintain legacy system grows. By utilising my specialization and training experience this plan can be achieved by recruiting Junior programmers (degree +1-2 years’ experience) in Java or Python (both modern languages) and upskilling them in isCOBOL and FlexGen. Without my specialization the alternative route to growth would involve recruitment of experienced senior resources with both COBOL and Java/Python experience, a much scarcer and more expensive route which would inhibit the projected growth plan.
