Profile
Accomplished senior-level programmer and software consultant, with extensive expertise in Endevor administration, z/OS, JCL, Assembler, REXX, and CLIST. Thrives in a multi-project environment.
Problem solver with extensive project experience for several large corporations. Able to reduce costs, cycle time, and errors, and simultaneously increase quality. Loves to contribute to cost avoidance.
Rapidly assimilates new technologies and methodologies. Knows how to learn from manuals, and, in turn, how to train others. Team player.
Highly effective communicator. Ability to interface and build rapport with clients/end-users, technical specialists, and management at any level.
Published author. Sample technical writing available upon request.
Experience:
Recent courses: Scrum Master Fundamentals, Scrum Master Certification, Java, IBM’s Master the Mainframe (including Visual Studio, Ansible, Python and some USS). Achieved Levels 1&2 and almost finished with Level 3 project. Also courses in Visual Basic for Applications and RESTful API’s. Object Oriented Design, Learning Python
Edge Technologies, (Consultant, December 2017 – September 30, 2018)
Conversion from Librarian to Endevor – subcontractor on government project
Evaluated existing Endevor instances and found issues significant enough to warrant a new, generalized instance of Endevor. Created new instance to accommodate all code in Librarian as well as in Endevor.
Evaluated Librarian instance, discovering that quite a bit of the inventory was missing and some was corrupted. Worked with the IDMS DBA to recover the corrupted source.
Tested and loaded the new Endevor instance and trained two new administrators while doing so.
Project was completed successfully and on time.
Bank of America/Merrill Lynch (AVP, then VP 9/2004-4/2017)
Rapidly acquired an in-depth knowledge of a highly complex and customized Endevor implementation with about 15,000 lines of Assembler exit code and local add-ons. Documented same.
Became the de facto lead when senior personnel left.
Maintained, documented, enhanced, and simplified Endevor exits written in Assembler, COBOL, and REXX and related ISPF panels and the programs that drove them.
Simplified and streamlined processes and retired processors making reference to obsolete program products. Cleaned up over 100,000 obsolete Endevor artifacts and got rid of the remaining Fortran!
Reduced errors in the routine production delivery jobs by over 84% by making simple changes, like REGION sizes.
Prevented a disaster by observing a new feature in Endevor V12 which required product changes before implementation. Determined how to correct the unfortunate feature with minimal impact.
Wrote extensive documentation and provided training for the group.
Took the pilot phase of a floundering project (estimated at several man years) to completion in 6 months.
Upgraded Endevor software repeatedly, from 4.0 to 7, 7 to 12, 12 to 14, 14 to 15, 15 to 16, and did the ground work for the upgrade from 16 to 18, retiring local code no longer needed and retrofitting code determined to be still needed, including evaluating and resolving over 400 changes to ISPF panels.
Served as technical lead on the upgrade from lower levels of COBOL to V5 of COBOL providing support to the POC team, including vendor problem contact.
Handled 70 some JCLCHECK issues (after conversion from JCLPREP), including working with the vendor extensively. Documented previously undocumented JCLCHECK exit code.
Identified how the compilers could be run on a single LPAR in a plex despite shared initiator classes. Coded, tested, and implemented the solution, expected to save over $300,000 per year.
Determined how to replace Intertest with Xpediter, then IBM's Debug Tool. Coded, tested, implemented.
In the PDS/E conversion in preparation for the COBOL upgrade, “rightsized” the files in question, returning 8 million tracks of DASD, avoiding the cost of acquiring additional DASD.
Resolved “Monday morning” USS problem some packages were encountering by realizing the impact of a change by another area reported in an unrelated context.
Traced USS problem (jobs being cancelled) to the fact that LPAR-wide USS file sharing was not turned on. Found several work arounds.
IBM Global Services (Senior IT Specialist 04/1994 – 05/2003)
Invited to 1996 IBM Leadership Circle (attended by company’s top 1%).
Renovated the Configuration Management at client location. Audited, identified, and eliminated obsolete manual procedures and methodologies.
Closed a loophole in the software configuration management process that previously allowed applications programmers to run untested software against production databases and files.
Prepared the shop for migration to Endevor, created software-training courses, and trained 100+ employees to use Endevor (saving tens of thousands in training costs).
Reduced review time of new batch-production jobs from 210 days to less than 10 without increasing staff or decreasing availability by writing the standards exit in COBOL, testing, and deploying it.
Health Insurance Enrollment Application Project:
Served as Technical Lead on the migration from OS/VS COBOL and VS COBOL II to COBOL for OS/390.
Diaqnosed major systems issues to improper use of SMP/E. (Senior programmer used MTS for both toleration maintenance and newly upgraded code. Therefore, we got half baked code, which caused repeated and unexpected failures of both production and development LPARs.
Traced the loss of all VSAM on a volume (including test and production catalogs) to a sysprog running an old IVP which included an IDCAMS ALTER REMOVE VOLUMES command.
Blue Cross Blue Shield of NJ 1985 – 1994
Technical Systems Consultant
Co-authored the strategic plan for this project. Managed all phases of development (including staff supervision, budgeting, and software evaluation). Advised upper management on technical issues.
Led the reduction of print volume shop-wide without impacting I/S or the user community, saving $4M+ in the first year alone.
Designed and wrote programs to manage a 3M+ software budget, including contract negotiations and cost projections and accounts payable for mainframe software.
