KenGen is a power generating company that deals with generation and step up of power. Olkaria Geothermal Development Division generates electricity from super-heated steam that is drilled from the ground. Water is heated by volcanic activity of underlying rocks to form steam. Skills acquired include; Repair and service of generators and motors e.g. 500kVA mobile diesel electric generator which worked as an auxiliary generator and 1900kVA generators driving the draw works. Repair and maintenance of pumps and compressors. We were able to repair the Sullair Caterpillar c15 engine screw type compressor.

KPLC is responsible for power step down, billing and power distribution in the country. The departments I was involved in include;
Operations and Maintenance- Maintenance of 11kV lines and low voltage lines. We maintained a 600V power line and also repaired a 200V line after a power surge had caused the line to short circuit. Design and Construction- Design and construction of new power lines and rerouting of networks. We were able to construct a new 3 phase power line from a 630KvA transformer. Following the expansion of roads, we rerouted a number of power lines whose poles had been positioned by the road. Electrical Plant- Maintenance and commission of transformers e.g. Toshiba 1MvA transformer and the 315KvA transformer as a reliever.
Customer Service- Billing and revenue collection.
