March 16 – August 19 Homemaker

March 14 – February 16 Founding Partner, Project Community, Beijing, China

Reason for moving to Beijing was that my husband got a job there.

Whilst living in Beijing, I saw the need for a homeless shelter and for a year I familiarised myself with other charities in Beijing city and took classes to acclimatize myself with the basics of Chinese language. Project Community was founded with two other partners and 501(c)(3) status granted, and a partnership developed with Beijing International Christian Fellowship (BICF) Church. I started an outreach of food, clothing and other basic needs to the homeless population in Beijing. This was maintained with a regular attendance of 25-50 volunteers. A property and staff were identified to start a homeless shelter however the venture did not proceed further due to the departure of key team members.

I was also asked to travel to other provinces in China to teach and educate staff of various homeless shelters and other charities the basics on running a facility and/or shelter and setting up policies, protocols and risk assessments. I also taught basics on helping those that struggles with mental health. I taught in Beijing and Shanxi.
