Resume:

Jake Weems

Iowa State University: BS Mechanical Engineering (August 2017-May 2021)

Van Buren Tech Center: Advanced Manufacturing

• Hands on, formal learning of CNC and Manual machining strategies, general safety, and machine shop activities (inc. measurement, tool choice, machine choice, deburring).

Design Engineering Internship: Getman Corporation (May 2019 - August 2019)

• Learned effective use of GD&T on a deep and diverse group of parts.

• Experienced the process of taking an idea from sketch to working part within a large organization. Including, BOM updates withing Epicor (ERP Program), check out/in process on Solidworks PDM, Solidworks assembly techniques on large assemblies (10,000+ parts).

• Worked on an interdepartmental project editing detailed drawings of hydraulic cylinders and classifying them based off of their expected usage and defining characteristics. Then updating their standing within company files and ERP software.

Manufacturing Engineering Technician: Iowa State University (August 2019 – June 2021)

• Brought concepts from napkin sketch to working prototype, oftentimes very quickly. Made use of creative thinking and extensive strategizing in workholding, process order, and tooling/machine choice to create one-off parts without expending available resources/time.

• Applied effective GD&T to the design and manufacturing processes. Learned to limit error and keep parts within tolerance using proper processes in the correct order. Make use of design for manufacture strategies.

• Used Mastercam, conversational CNC, and manual machining. Learned strengths/weaknesses of each and how to play to their strengths to build parts that work, in a timely manner.

• Built upon past TIG and MIG welding experience to become highly proficient. Gained knowledge on how to properly engineer a weld for strength, easier welding and cost effectiveness. Also how to work welding into a manufacturing process.

Owner-operator: Family Farm (2005 - Present)

• Used waning resources, managed personnel, kept up operations, despite countless roadblocks.

• Planted and harvested over 250 acres every year using sub-par (old) equipment that required extensive mechanical capabilities to keep running. Made use of backyard machine shop and welders (TIG, MIG) to manufacture parts and fix machines when purchasing wasn’t an option.

• Worked on a schedule with strict deadlines and harsh consequences (no crop to sell); while also juggling school, sports, and other jobs.

President of the Iowa State University Motocross Club from Spring 2018- Fall 2020.
