I worked with the Kenya marine and fisheries institute in Kisumu, Kenya i.e. KEMFRI ‘s laboratory technical personnel in budget preparation for water quality assessment, with a focus on heavy metal detection in water zones within wetland areas of Kakamega area i.e. Rosterman village within artisanal mining activities and determining microbial activity in the wetland area. In partnership with artisanal and small-scale gold miners of Kakamega, I was involved in supporting local supply chain due diligence, traceability; and formalization under the 2016 Mining Act. Providing technical assistance on mineral processing, mercury-free gold recovery, environmental health and safety, sound chemicals management, and building local capacities for post-mining land use through bamboo planting thus promoting ecological restoration . 2

Research on the use of micro-organisms as an alternative to mercury in gold extraction at the Institute of Biotechnology JKUAT University. Activities involved included: routine laboratory work such as sample preparation, weighing, drying and digestion; total sample dissolution by Aqua Regia, Hydrofluoric and Boric acids for whole rock, soil and sediments; Using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer in analysis of water and effluents to determine pH, Nitrates, Phosphates, Alkalinity, Sulphates and metals; Gravimetric determinations of Sulphur Trioxide by Barium Chloride precipitation. XRF analysis of assorted samples for elemental indications; Understanding Laboratory safety precautions over possible dangers of chemical, electrical and other hazards; Carrying out all aspects of laboratory cleanliness and proper handling of equipment, apparatus and glassware; Working together with CIPT (Centre of Intellectual Property Technology) and KIPI (Kenya Industrial Property Institute) in mercury free innovations.
