During the course of my training my responsibilities have been
Evaluation, Resuscitation, Investigation and initial management of patients with head injury including patients with poly trauma.
Operative management of patients with head injury. The department performs about 400 major emergency surgeries annually most of which are primarily carried out by senior residents in Neurosurgery on duty in consultation with a faculty member. As a senior resident on call every alternate day, I have personally carried out surgeries for depressed skull fractures, intracranial hematomas (Extradural hematoma, subdural hematoma, intracerebral hematoma, and chronic subdural hematomas), and decompressive craniectomies.
Evaluation, Investigation and Management of other neurosurgical emergencies such as acute presentation of brain tumours, hydrocephalus, brain abscess. I have independently performed V-P shunts, surgeries for surface brain tumours, intracranial abscess and tuberculomas.
Management of outpatients in Neurosurgery. (Six days a week - about 200 patients). Screening of patients attending OPD, planning investigations for surgery and subsequently counselling for the same.
Management of admitted patients – I was initially responsible for 30 admitted patients. In the final year I supervised the work of my junior M.Ch course students in the management of about 30 admitted patients. As a ward resident, I am familiar with the pre-operative and post-operative management of most neurosurgical problems (elective and emergency) and the management of complications that may arise in some patients.
Elective surgical procedures – I have been first assistance and independently for a variety of neurosurgical procedures including intracranial tumours, skull base tumours, endoscopic procedures, stereotactic biopsies, and craniotomies, spinal surgery for degenerative diseases, tumours, craniovertebral junction anomalies. I have performed surgeries for brain tumours, laminectomy/laminotomy and surgery for lumbar discectomy.
