Analyzing differences in data reported by the Haitian Ministry of Public Health (MSPP) and major NGOs (Medecins Sans Frontières, GHESKIO and Partners in Health) during the first years of the epidemic. Bronx River Watershed Restoration Project (Project Manager)

oTransect settings: Used New York City Department of Environmental Protection’s base map for the Bronx River to settle three transects in the northern portion of the estuary to capture/monitor/assess the diversity of aquatic life (mostly diadromous species of fish) in the river.

oWater and soil sampling: Sampled top/bottom water within the transects (daily intake) and stream-bottom substrates in the Northern end of the river using Kemmerer bottle, Dip Sampler and Direct Method techniques. In partnership with Lehman College Department of Biology, hundreds of high school and college students were trained in water and sediment/substrate sampling along with a hand full of community organization members.

Massachusetts Public Interest Research Group (MASSPIRG): Pittsfield-Boston, MA. 1997

Worked with several community groups/leaders and academic institutions in MA, NY, PA and VT to develop a water sampling and testing method to identify and map out the PCB’s hot spots along the Housatonic River. Water and sediment samples were tested onsite and/or submitted to commercial labs in Canada, Amherst and Boston (MA) for further testing. Over 50 High School and college students were involved in the statistical analyses of the data collected and created a three-layer map reflecting a wide range of concentration of PCBs [et al.] along the buffer zone and within the aquatic-ecotype.

oIdentification and application of major remediation and control techniques commonly used for this hazard (PCB’s). An eco-toxicology report was produced, suggesting comprehensive/sustainable strategies to decontaminate the substrate and improve the aquatic habitat.
