SEED EXPERT, Integrated seed sector development (ISSD Uganda)/Wageningen UR Uganda ltd June 2019-April 2021

Brief: The ISSD Plus Uganda programme aims to support the development of a vibrant, pluralistic, and market-oriented seed sector, providing smallholder farmers access to affordable quality seed of superior varieties. Thus, increased income of small-scale farmers and increased number of rural households that are seed and food secure.

Key Achievements

• Trained, coached and provided technical backstopping to 47 Local Seed Businesses (LSBs) groups in quality seed production, Seed processing, Seed quality control & marketing.

• Developed appropriate quality assurance mechanisms for farmer-based seed production.

• Linked 47LSBs to research, extension, markets, quality assurance and finance/credit service providers.

• Supported 6LSBs in the development of competitive grant proposals for seed production infrastructure (Storage facility).

• Organized, coordinated several regional workshops with stakeholders and facilitated 3 main zonal multi-stakeholder platform meetings.

• Coordinated, set up and supervised establishment of demonstrations (participatory variety selection

& yield evaluation trials) and conduct field days for seed growers/LSBs every season.

Brief: CHAIN UG is a local Non governmental Organisation that stated in 2008 as Community based organisation., Its primary focus is to support farming communities in response to widespread household poverty, food Insecurity, poor health and social welfare all of which are curtailed by lack of coordinated efforts in agriculture, nutrition and enterprise development interventions in Uganda Key Achievements

• Participated in the establishment of a functional cassava seed system in Uganda; which enhanced update and utilization of quality cassava seed technologies and innovations for a sustainable productivity of cassava seed system in Mukono, Arua and Kamwenge Districts

• Participated in the training of farmers in Masaka, Mityana and Mukono in Coffee post harvesting handling and linked them to Markets.

• Participated in a project commercialization and scaling out of sweet potato silage in piggery value chain in the Lake Victoria crescent Agro-ecological zone that benefited 60 Households in central region and greater Mpigi

• Enrolled and trained 50 farmers groups on Indigenous vegetable seed production and marketing under a project “Development of gender responsive commercial seed system for African Indigenous Vegetables”.

• Recruited 21 Local seed business groups and guided them in site selection for quality seed production. and established demonstration gardens for bean seed production in 7 groups of Rwenzori region for 3 seasons.

• Popularized the adoption and use of PICs bags in Mubende, Mityana, Mpigi and Masaka which reduced post-harvest losses in Maize and other grain produce

• Trained more than 200 farmers of 7 groups (In Rwenzori region) in fields of best agronomic practices, quality seed production guidelines, post-harvest handling and fostering linkages to partners such as MAAIF for Inspection, Agro-input dealers and NARO for foundation seed.

• Train Local seed business groups in Business planning, resource mobilization and gender mainstreaming

• Organized an awareness symposium in Kiruhura district on use of renewable solution for energy needs that sensitized participants from Lyantonde, Sheema, Ibanda and Kiruhura district on use biogas industrial biogas and utilization of bio-slurry fertilizers.

• Demonstrated trials on the efficiency of bio-slurry fertilizers on selection crops of Cabbage, beans and Maize and this attracted many farmers to use bio-slurry fertilizers due to their yield benefits.

• Installed a productive digester for Milk cooling cooperatives in Kiruhura district. VOLUNTEER, Coalition for Health Agriculture and Income Networks Uganda (CHAIN U) April-Sept2015 Key achievements

• Worked for 4 months in managing nursery beds; prepared soil for raising seedlings, raised seedlings, monitored schedule of watering, and prepared plants for sale to customers.

• Guided farmers on best planting and management practices and was available for consultation on site to farmers as needed.

• Also responsible for management of the “mother garden” and distribution of grafted mangoes and oranges as well as sweet potato vine to farmers.

INTERN, Uganda Christian University-Community Outreach Program, Kampala, UG Feb-Oct 2015 Key achievements

• During the 8-month internship, was assigned a farmer in Nagalama sub county and supported her household in growing vegetables, bananas, and coffee on 1.5 acres.

• Analyzed crops and set up a demonstration field.

• Assisted 200 students weekly to access library laptops and computers as well as assisting them on internet connections.

• During my 2.5months internship covered the practical application of concepts pertaining to horticulture (fruits and vegetables), annual crops and experimental plots, aquacultures, agro-forestry, perennial crops (coffee and bananas) and livestock (piggery, dairy cattle, and poultry).
