Concentration: Process Engineering, Minor: Pre-Medical Studies, Chemistry ENGINEERING RESEARCH AND PROJECTS
UMaine Hydroxychloroquine Synthesis Process Design February 2020 - May 2020
● Successfully designed, optimized, and economically evaluate a process flow diagram that use a series of PFRs and CSTRs to achieve the highest possible yield of hydroxychloroquine
● Addressed potential issues and justifications of the design such as start-up, temperature control, process control, utility usage, and limitations of the reactors.
● Performed a Hazards and Operational Safety analysis to identify any hazards that could occur during the synthesis of HCQ and inside the reactors.
UMaine Tangential Flow Filtration System August 2020 - October 2020
● Collaborated with a team of three to characterize a system to accurately predict the operating conditions and procedures that would achieve a specified performance while maintaining minimal deterioration of the membrane over time and managing aggregates of the product to a minimum.
● Ultrafiltration/Defiltration of the final product to purify and concentrate while preventing aggregation due to over concentration, over pressurization, poor cleaning, shear, and improper system design.
● Developed equations and graphical methods using collected data under different experimental conditions and changing variables, ensuring the system doesn’t operate above 70% of its maximum power. UMaine Sucrose Hydrolysis in a Catalytic Reactor Design October 2020 – December 2020
● Collaborated with a team of three to design a fixed bed catalytic reactor for the hydrolysis of sucrose to form glucose and fructose.
● Applied previously learned skills to find dependencies of the steady-state conversion, the apparent rate constant, the Thiele modulus, and the effectiveness factor of the porous catalyst on the particle size and the reactor temperature.
UMaine Wastewater Treatment Chlorination Capstone Design February 2021 - Present
● Designed a chlorination/dichlorination process using two methods, bleach design and electrolysis unit.
● Performed an economic analysis comparing the two methods and listed the benefits of each design.
● Included improvements to the designs by separating hydrogen and hypochlorous acid to be sold for a profit. AREAS OF EXPERTISE
