Dear Mr. Michell,
My name is Charles Sterner. Please accept this cover letter and resume as my application the Vacant Assistant Athletic Training position at Appalachian State University.
My many experiences, both clinically and personally, have given me a strong foundation of knowledge and clinical experience. I am currently working as the Head Athletic Trainer at Gaston Day School where I have had the opportunity to learn and grow as a person and as a clinician. I have had the opportunity to work on my own which has allowed me to trust the skills I have learned and use them in a different setting. I have also worked with the administration to set up a sports medicine class at the school for upper classman to grow a love for the sports medicine field.
During my time as an athletic training student and Graduate Assistant, I worked in a variety of clinical sites and a diverse group of patients. Based on their evaluations, my preceptors recognized my dedication and willingness to contribute to the success of the sports medicine team and to increase my foundational knowledge in athletic training. In addition, I have studied extremely hard to be successful in the classroom and often sought to apply that knowledge at my clinical sites where I work to become the best clinician I can be.
I worked with a diverse set of sports, 18 in total, while serving as a Graduate Assistant at Chestnut Hill College which shaped my clinician skills as the Athletic Trainer for the Sprint Football, Cross Country, Track, and Women’s Lacrosse teams. Over my 2 years at Chestnut Hill College I worked hard, but also maintained a level of openness in growing in areas of weakness. Each of these experiences have taught me new skills and lessons that have improved my performance as an athletic trainer.
I feel that the experience of working with both women’s and men’s teams taught me how to grow interpersonally and learned to relate and adapt to each person or team dynamic while providing the best possible care. In the two years I have spent as a clinician I have gravitated towards manual therapy and hope to further increase my knowledge in this field, as well as in growing in other fields where I do not feel as strong.
My internship with the Baltimore Ravens taught me the importance of balancing a strong work ethic while also enjoying the little things within a busy day. I also learned that respect is earned in many ways and each athlete should be appreciated and treated as an individual. This experience also helped confirm my interest in working with football.
Aside from my athletic training activities, I am immensely proud of my personal achievements of being an Eagle Scout and earning the highest leadership role a scout can earn within troop, Junior Assistant Scoutmaster. These exemplify my leadership skills and dedication to accomplishing a goal. I believe this has carried through my academic and professional life. It will continue to be a strength that I progress into a full-time position as an assistant athletic trainer.
Thank you for considering me for any vacant Assistant Athletic Trainer position. I believe my ability to relate and learn from each experience will help me grow as a clinician will make me a good addition to the Sports medicine staff at Appalachian State University.
