Lead Administrator for Backups

Hired to Lead the project as an SME with total involvement in the implementations which includes Backup Server commissioning, upgrades, design and operational readiness at the same time to ensure Operations meet the compliance and customer SLA. Responsible to test out the new updates available for Backup Software in the Lab environment before bringing into production.

Learnt and mastered technologies like Cohesity, VDP and PowerShell SE.

Key Contributions:

Installation and configuration of Backup Infrastructure in multiple tools – NetBackup, Cohesity and Backup Exec.

Deployment of Data Domain devices and Cohesity clusters/nodes of various models from the racking stage to the backup configuration stage.

Managing 37 Cohesity clusters worldwide – includes Backup/Replication monitoring, reporting and troubleshooting. Additon of blocks to expand the capacity, upgrades to the latest supportable version of software as well as BIOS.

Used REST APIs in cohesity to write codes for automation which saved manual efforts – made use of Powershell as well as BASH (Linux CLI) to incorporate those APIs to pull data from a centralized location for creating different reports.

Migration of sites scattered across from same geographic region under one umbrella and create one single management server. This included moving backups of servers from vendor unsupported backup tool to the latest products including the ability to perform restorations.

Automation on several fronts using bash, Perl and PowerShell – major reports prepared are Backup Success Rate for both NetBackup and Cohesity, Long Running Job, Catalog Backup consolidated report, System State Backup status, Tape Rotation as per site’s requirement, Cohesity Cluster Utilization, Backups completing with warnings in Cohesity and several others.

Worked on the implementations of NetBackup AIR to replicate data across the globe and their disaster recovery.

Worked on developing a PS script which fixed quiescing related errors on 1700 servers at once.

Hands on experience on Amazon Web Services to help setup the S3 storage for backup and recovery.

Key Contributions:

Worked on setting up VMware Intelligent Policy to take backups using SAN / NBD transport methods.

Designed and Built MSDP Server presented as iSCSI LUN from NetApp on Unix and Windows based machines on multiple locations.

Provided solution to backup Standalone PCs which was awarded as one of the top 3 ideas in the organization.

Implemented Enterprise Vault in the environment to setup backups for mailboxes and database servers.

Highly focused on automation in the environment. Created a tape rotation script which would find out which tapes are to be taken out from the library and which are available scratches to be loaded, mail would go to the respect site contact for doing so. Primarily hired as EMC Avamar specialist for managing 20 plus grids across Europe based on Gen3, Gen4 and Gen4s architecture. Also managed NetBackup servers (versions 6.0,7.1 and 7.5) to perform run-maintain jobs like backup failure troubleshooting, reporting, Vault Management etc. Environment setup included NDMP, Exchange, Flash-backups for both NetBackup and Avamar.

Key Contributions:

Designed the architecture of Cloud based data protection for vBlock720 using Avamar –Data Domain integration. Configured VM level backups based on VMproxy and NDMP backups via NAS accelerator on Avamar grids.

Implemented multi-threaded replication in EMC Avamar to facilitate multiple replication jobs to run at the same time boosting the performance between data centers. Designed strategy to setup NFS and CIFS backups remotely to speed up the process.

Performed Gen 3 to Gen 4 migration from a 4.0 TB Multimode grid to two Single node 2.6 TB grids

Data domain optimization for space management and load sharing. Also configured NFS backups over the same.

Revamped NetBackup schedule and upgraded Oracle servers. Optimized system availability (averaging 99.9% uptime) and equipped company with scalable systems to support fast business growth.

Worked on NetBackup, Avamar and Data Domain technologies for Backups and Storage Support for multiple accounts. Infrastructure was based on Linux, Solaris and Windows based Master servers for NetBackup, with knowledge on SAN Media Servers/ Clients, SQL/Oracle Backups, NDMP, Vaults and F+Ps. Domain knowledge on Networking and routing for WAN backups. Performed DR Tests on parallel as well as same site for UNIX and windows backup environment.

Key Contributions:

Directed the implementation of Nokia Siemens Network (NSN) for NetBackup 6.5.6. Installed the master server software on Linux machine and configured tape library via LPAR including tape solutioning (barcode specific).

Led in-house and consultant team in large-scale cloud-based environment also known as Biz-cloud for leading US client and configured backups on NetBackup, Avamar and Data Domain.

Implemented first ever Storage Lifecycle Policy (SLP) with Data Domain as the back end in addition to Tape library in CSC to manage Oracle backups.

Cross site Data Domain restore facility was also one of my key contributions. This allowed restoring data of a client from one data center to another data center locally which saved WAN traffic.

Stabilized, expanded and protected client network and PC environment. Upgraded NetBackup Master Servers from 6.5 to 7.1 as well as client servers for Oracle based backups to bring SLA rates to customer satisfaction.

Created documents for implementing NBU-DD integration, Cloud backup’s setup, Gen3 to Gen4 data migration in EMC Avamar.
