I have held both full time and part time positions at Headwaters Health Care Centre in Orangeville as a Medical and General Laboratory Technician. I was employed with this hospital for 10 years. I was also employed at Grand River Hospital in Kitchener. I held a casual position as a Phlebotomist/Collector. I was employed at this hospital for 2.5 years. I am proficient in many aspects of the healthcare field. My skills include phlebotomy, conducting ECG’s, preparing all specimens in a Microbiology setting, receiving specimens within the hospital as well as outside transport, daily temperature and maintenance checks on equipment, supply distribution and performing clerical duties. Intramuscular Injections

The components I have obtained in the intramuscular injection process include counselling and risk communication, informed consent, assessing if the individual is fit to inject, reporting of adverse events following injection, recognition and management of anaphylaxis, medication documentation. I am confident in my technique and knowledge of the equipment used to perform an injection.

Phlebotomy

Identifies self as staff and provides information to patients regarding the specimen collection process. Practices confidentiality and professionalism at all times. Performs venipuncture and capillary blood draws on all ages and condition of patients within my scope of practice. Verifies specimen suitability, including adequate amount and labels the tubes with proper identification. Electrocardiogram (ECG)

Performs recordings of the patient's heart muscle, to provide data for diagnosis of the heart. Attaches electrodes to chest, arms, and legs of patient. Connecting electrode leads to electrocardiograph and starts machine. Monitors electrocardiogram for abnormal patterns. Keys information into machine, replenishes supply of paper and ink in machine and reports malfunctions. Forwards final test results to attending physician for analysis and interpretation. Data Entry and Specimen Processing

Registers specimen information into Meditech, the hospital information system. Partakes in writing and implementing policies and procedures within the laboratory. Prepares specimens for transport to testing site. Loads specimens for analysis on automated equipment. Microbiology Accepts or rejects specimens based on policy. Performs urinalysis testing on urine analyzer. Selects appropriate culture media for a variety of specimens. Manually inoculates, streaks and incubates according to microbiology guidelines. Prepares gram stains manually and using cytospin.
