Ph.D. THESIS: Synthesis and characterization of surfactant foams for remediation of contaminated soil and detergent formulation

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF PH.D. TOPIC:

My Ph.D. thesis work was focused on the application of surfactant foam stabilized by nanoparticles (Silica, nano Zero Valent Iron) and other additives (Allyl alcohol, Ethylene glycol) for the treatment of diesel- contaminated soil. Remediation of diesel contaminated soil poses severe challenges, and it is crucial to develop suitable treatment technologies to remediate diesel contaminated soils successfully. In view of achieving this goal, I have been involved in developing nanomaterial, producing stable surfactant foam, and utilizing it to treat contaminated soil. My Ph.D. work’s ultimate aim was to overcome the environmental damage caused by the release of petroleum contaminants such as in the soil subsurface and groundwater due to oil spill incidents at drilling sites & refineries and pipelines and leaks from damaged storage tanks. The work involved the synthesis of nano Zero Valent Iron (nZVI) and iron oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticles and stabilization of the aqueous alkyl poly glucoside phosphate (APG-Ph) foam and to study the efficacy of these nanoparticles dispersed foam for the removal of diesel hydrocarbon from the soils of different composition and nature. First, of its kind, our work was reporting the remediation of diesel-contaminated desert soil, coastal soil, and clay soil by aqueous alkyl poly glucoside phosphate (APG-Ph) surfactant foams stabilized by nZVI and Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The nZVI and Fe3O4 nanoparticles were prepared by liquid-phase reduction and precipitation methods, respectively. The effects of nZVI and Fe3O4 nanoparticles on foamability, foam stability, surface tension, and remediation of diesel- contaminated desert soil were examined at various surfactant concentrations (vol %) and nanoparticles (mg/l). The nZVI (3.5 mg/l) nanoparticle stabilized APG-Ph foam (0.1 vol %) results in diesel removal efficiency of 94.6, 95.3, 57.5 % for desert soil, coastal soil and clay soil, respectively. The Fe3O4 (3.5 mg/l) nanoparticle stabilized APG-Ph foam (0.1 vol %) manifests maximum removal efficiency of 76.0, 79.6, and 51.6% for desert soil, coastal soil, clay soil, respectively. Thus, I have been focused on broad areas of scientific themes, including material science, surfactant chemistry (surface phenomenon), and environmental technology. 2
