Roles and Responsibility

. Shift supervisors work in retail, warehouses, or hospitality (e.g.

restaurants, cafes) and coordinate the daily operations during

a shift. They are in charge of maintaining high productivity and a

consistently positive customer experience. They usually report to

the shift manager or the production supervisor.

. The Shift Leader's responsibilities include creating a shift schedule,

dealing with no-shows, delegating tasks, handling cash up, and

reporting any issues to the manager. To be successful as a Shift

Leader, you should be able to manage a team of people and ensure that

all duties are performed accurately.

. The five key supervisory roles include Educator, Sponsor, Coach,

Counselor, and Director. Each is described below. Note that in

your role as a supervisor, you will be using these five roles, in some

combination, simultaneously, depending on the needs of the team

members.

. Shift supervisors must have good communication skills to lead and

clearly explain duties to workers. Strong leaders also have the

ability to motivate, make decisions, manage time and evaluate the

performance of others.
