Education

California Institute of Technology Pasadena, CA

B.S. Chemical Engineering GPA: 3.5 June 2020

Projects

Designed a microfluidic medical device for point-of-care antibiotic susceptibility testing to beta-lactams in gonorrhea patients. The device immobilized cell clusters via variably sized cell traps; antibiotic susceptibility testing was tracked through fluorescently labeled D-amino acid staining of the cell wall. (Winter 2020)

Simulated the effects of a recycle stream on inertial streaming to separate bacteria from blood for application in microfluidic medical devices. This project is ongoing. (Spring 2020)

Built and tested a microplasma reactor to produce nitrous oxide from air and pure oxygen for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and pulmonary hypertension. Alterations to feed conditions across the project led to a 170% increase to the production of NO. (Winter 2020)

Designed and prototyped a personal beacon locator so lost hikers can use food in a small 3D-printed microbial fuel cell to send a rescue signal. During development, 3-person team improved peak power by 21%. (Fall 2019)

Developed a project proposal and timeline for the creation of a new HVAC system. Design requirements were determined based on expectations of the beachhead market. (Winter 2020)

Synthesized -tris(ethylenediamine) cobalt(lll) iodide to demonstrate the utility of enantiomeric specific reactions and experimentally demonstrated that a low resolution spectrometer is unable to capture peak splitting in chiral compounds. (Spring 2018)

Research Experience

Robb Group – SURF Pasadena, CA

Undergraduate Researcher February 2018 – September 2018

Synthesized, purified, and characterized precursors to create mechanophores embedded within polymers for the visual demonstration of material deformation.

Validated density functional theory based computational software for screening potential mechanophores by cataloguing known mechanophores from over fifty research papers.

Work Experience

Caltech Dining Services Pasadena, CA

Waiter January 2016 – March 2020

Prepared and served dinner for up to 100 students each night.

Victor E. Benstead Plunge Torrance, CA

Lifeguard and Swim Instructor June 2013 – August 2017

Instructed over 500 students from 1 – 80 years old in water safety skills and proper swimming form.

Trained new employees in effective lifesaving techniques and facility duties while performing managerial tasks such as organization of employee shifts and closing.

Publications and Presentations

Finalist of the Gee family poster presentation for the Validation of the CoGEF Method as a Tool for the Systematic Development of Mechanophores. (Fall 2018)

C. Husic, I. Klein, D. Kovács, N. Choquette, and M. Robb. “Validation of the CoGEF Method as a Predictive Toosl for Polymer Mechanochemistry.” J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2020, 142, 38, 16364–16381

Skills

Proficient in Microsoft Office, CAD, Python, MATLAB, Mathematica, COMSOL, and ChemDraw

H-NMR, C13-NMR, infrared, melting point, mass spectrometry, and UV-Vis characterization

Separations, gel permeation chromatography, titration, and chemical synthesis

Technical drawings, soldering, power tools
