LIZ BUI, J.D. PH.D. 858-***-**** ******@*****.***

Vice President, Diversity & Inclusion Officer and IP Counsel Liz is a solution-based business executive who reports directly to the CEO and participates in Company Board meetings. Liz is ViaCyte’s first Diversity & Inclusion

(D&I) Officer. Through her over 2 decades of diversity and inclusion partnerships in the community, Liz knows first-hand successful cultures cannot be diverse if they are not first inclusive. Liz divides her time between D&I work and the company’s only in-house attorney as IP counsel. Liz oversees all intellectual property including patents trademarks, copyrights and trade secrets. Liz has created a patent portfolio, based 99% from internal innovations, directed to a pancreatic cell therapy for diabetes. The formidable portfolio consists of over 780 patents and 250 pending applications worldwide, enabling the company to secure over $300M in financing. Over her 14 years at ViaCyte, Liz has also held titles such as Communications Director and Business & Corporate Development in addition to her IP and general legal responsibilities. Liz is also an Adjunct Faculty at USD School of Law and supervisor for the USD Patent Clinic, teaching, supervising and mentoring law students. 4/2007 - Present Vice President, Diversity & Inclusion Officer and IP Counsel Diversity & Inclusion

− First D&I Officer named for a privately-held biotech/pharmaceutical company and engaging executive leadership at the intersection of inclusion and innovation in a fast-pace technology driven company with 7 business units and clinical trials in 13 locations in the U.S., Canada and Europe.

− Created a strategic roadmap by first gathering baseline data including confidential self-identification surveys for executive leadership, management, individual contributors, Board of Directors, scientific advisors and vendors or contracted 3rd parties. Analyze, synthesize and evaluate all data for all D&I initiatives and continued use of response surveys to monitor success of all programs.

− Build confidential individual leadership and management profiles, and analyze and evaluate data to determine opportunities to incorporate more inclusive practices to leadership style across business functions and measure effectiveness of recommended behavioral changes on employee engagement and outcomes.

− Worked with a D&I consultants including human resource and employment attorneys to draft reasonably and measurable goals to improve company employee demographics to long-term be more representative of San Diego, for example, update hiring processes and procedures that are reflected internal company policies, in job descriptions, community partnership and outreach with institutions such as Black Chamber of Commerce, Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, regional government and city council, and local area universities and community colleges.

− Review and update employee performance management criteria to ensure expectations and core competencies reflect the company’s D&I objectives and goals.

− Partner with D&I counsel and consultants to deliver customized unconscious bias to conscious inclusion training in small groups based on leadership profile, leadership/management role and subsequent incorporation of a proprietary virtual inclusion app customized to each leader per their profile.

− Formed and launched the company’s first Employee Resource Group (ERG) including guidance on drafting ERG mission statements and goals, organization, engagement, how to measure data and deliver better programs. Company ERGs are based around shared interests as compared to shared self-identification, which has been shown to increase “tribalism” within corporations and produce less engagement. Company ERGs include ViaCyte Volunteers, ViaCyte Bibliophiles, #OptOutside Challenges and Learning Lunches, which include interviews of leading experts in the company’s mission.

− Planned and implemented a virtual onboarding of all ERGs and all new employees through the pandemic to maintain company culture.
