Cardiovascular Surgical Intensive Care Unit (80 beds/6 units)

-Care for patients from a variety of specialties including internal medicine, Neuro ICU, Surgical ICU, Coronary Care ICU, Medical ICU, Heart Failure ICU, trauma, orthopedics, and oncology.

-Management of complete patient care including infusions via IV pumps (fluids, antibiotics, insulin, tPA, heparin, blood products, cardiac drips, electrolyte replacements, TPN, sedation, paralytics, narcotics, vasopressors, vasodilators), enteral feedings through a variety of feeding tubes, wound care, telemetry monitoring, administration of a variety of medications (e.g. IV narcotics), lab draws, review labs, establish and/or maintain peripheral and central lines, and health education.

- Administration of medications through PO, IV, subcutaneous, intramuscular, topical, vaginal, rectal, and NG/PEG/PEJ/GJ tubes utilizing the 10 Rights of Medication Administration.

- Skilled in telemetry, ECG interpretations, patient controlled analgesia (PCA), epidural infusions, subarachnoid drain management, respiratory care and suctioning, wound care with dressing changes, wound VAC therapy, pressure ulcer care and prevention, bladder scanning, and straight catheterization.

- Interpret vital signs; obtain blood and microbiology samples; review laboratory results (CBC, CMP, blood glucose, BMP, cardiac enzymes, peaks and troughs, coagulation factors [PT/INR, aPTT]), microbiology reports (sputum, stool, UA, wounds, and blood), and procedural reports.

- Experience with emergent bedside procedures including: emergently opening chest cavity for cardiac massage, cardiac window or ECMO insertion and emergently opening abdominal cavity for abdominal compartment syndrome or aortic rupture/dissection.

- Experience in running codes following ACLS algorithm with supplemental acute surgical and medical interventions (i.e. central/arterial line insertion, tPA administration, and other necessary life saving measures).
