Antibacterial activity and Phytochemical Screening of Essential Oil of Foeniculum vulgare (Fennel)

The objective of this research was to evaluate the antibacterial activity of fennel essential oils towards bacteria. The antibacterial activity of essential oil of Foeniculum vulgare var. RF-143 against gram negative bacterial strains of Salmonella typhimurium (MTCC-1251 & MTCC-1252) was determined by Kirby-Bauer technique (disc–diffusion method). A significant antibacterial activity was shown by the F. vulgare var. RF- 143 essential oils. The phytochemical screening of Fennel seed showed the presence of secondary metabolites like. Alkaloids, Flavonoids, Terpenoids, and Saponins. This study concluded that F. vulgare var. RF- 143 essential oils may be useful natural bactericides for the control of bacterial diseases and their significant bacterial activity appears promising.
