Professional Experience
Commercial Environmental Cleanup 2010 thru 2014
The last small business I worked for was an environmental Services Company, Cleaning chemical tanks for paper mills, within the southeast United States. I was responsible for the normal invoicing, accounts receivable, accounts payable and payroll. A few months later, the son of the owner left the company to work for Allstate Insurance. His duties of training employees, and keeping up with the safety programs required of the mills, in order to work for them, were transferred to me. As personnel manager I screened applicants, did their background checks and administered drug tests and follow-up. Since we worked in several states, I made sure that our workers comp and liability insurance met the customer and state requirements. Travel was our second largest expense which required me to track our spending on hotels, periderm and everyday expenses. Late in 2010 one of our employees was seriously injured, in a commercial accident. It was determined that the accident was not our fault, but the way the contracts were written we were forced to take the accident hit. This affected our safety rating and made it impossible for us to continue working at the mills. To keep the business from closing, I came up with a way to restructure the company and reopen under a different name and insurance. This restructure gave him the time to find a new owner and allowed us to acquire several new contracts worth millions of dollars. Things were looking up. Soon after the owner decided to sell the corporation. After reviewing my options I decided to retire.
Retail Trailer Sales 2008 thru 2009
This small business consisted of a retail store, shop for repairing utility trailers and a sales lot for new and used utility trailers. I was originally hired to straighten out there books and tax returns. They were set up in QuickBooks; however he didn’t know how to use it. After reviewing the transactions for the previous three years I was able to balance the company bank accounts, accounts receivable and payables. I filed amended tax returns for the business and the owners. A substantial refund resulted and was used to remodel the company store. One other thing we did was to purchase a computer point of sale program that would assist in inventory management. We did a complete inventory, assigned a cost and sale price to each item. This allowed us to run daily reports tracking sales. Other reports were used to reorder sold items. This saved a great deal of time and let us knows what items sold and what didn’t. I also observe red that we opened the store at 8:00am and closed at 4:00. I felt that if we opened an hour earlier and closed an hour later the customers had more time to drop off repairs or pickup parts before going to work. This worked well and increased income.
Unfortunately it comes a time. In every small business that the owner feels that he is losing control and wants his business back. I could understand and moved on to my next experience.
Retail Sales Cabinets and Countertops 2001-2007
A friend of mine told me about a small business that sold cabinets and counter to new home builders. The wife had been doing the accounting but wanted relief so she could concentrate on the day to day operations. I started with the normal invoicing, accounts receivable, payables and payroll. Since most of our customers were big item contracts, I found that I had extra time on my hands. Having no experience in this industry, I looked for something I could help with. I learned that weekly, trucks delivered new products that had to be unloaded and placed in the warehouse for delivery. I volunteered to check off inventory as it came off the truck and assign an area to hold the various jobs. From this activity I learned how the flow of work product worked and met the guys that built the countertops. They taught me the differences in the type of wood and the composition of the countertops. I soon learned to read blueprints and studied how and where the product was placed in the home. As I got better at this, I was given plans to review to make sure all the correct cabinets were ordered to complete the plan. As I got better at this I began saving the company time and money by getting the orders right the first time. Another thing I learned was cabinets were being lost because they were placed in the wrong spot. Also the business was growing and we were running out or space to hold cabinets. What I did was devise a plan that could hold twice as many cabinets and the spots were clearly labeled so fewer stocking mistakes were made. Everything seemed to be going well till 2007. With the fall of the economy, the housing sector and business began to fall off. Expenses began to increase causing the owners to rethink their need for me. I decided to move on to other opportunities.
Retirement 2015-2020
During 2015 my wife, who is a High School teacher, was transferred to another school in the District. This caused her morning drive to change to over an hour each way. During the school year, this was done in the darkness on a busy two lane road. Since this was quite dangerous we decided to move closer to the school. This was a small town so we had to do a lot of looking. After about 8 months we found what we were looking for only 4 blocks from the school. Upon moving in, we found a lot of things needed to be repaired, painted and yard work done,
Since there was an older women living in the home, it took me almost 2 years to get the inside right and then there was the outside. Since I didn’t’ have that much experience on 3 acres and remolding the inside, it took me longer too finished. To this day the yard is ever changing. Since I felt all was pretty much in hand it was time we got to work finding a job since we needed the money. That brings us to today. I’m ready to get back to my field. I may be a little rusty, but with your understanding, I’ll try to get up to speed as quickly as I can. Thank you for your consideration.
