Title of Ph.D theis
Experimental study of spray characteristics of biodiesel anddiesel blends in a spray chamber and performance characteristics of DI diesel engine under optimized conditions Abstract
Spray characteristics of transportation fuels play a vital role in the combustion process, performance and emission characteristics of diesel engines. Generally, small droplet size and large spread area of fuel sprays are considered as desirable characteristics to improve the atomization ability and enhance the combustion efficiency. Biodiesel, a promising alternative fuel for internal combustion engines has gained increasing importance due to the predicted depletion of fossil fuel resources and environmental hazards. Combustion and emission characteristics of inedible vegetable oils and its derivatives are quite different from those of diesel fuel, due to their higher molecular weight, viscosity, density and vaporization characteristics. These properties have a greater impact on the fuel spray and the interaction of spray with air in the combustion chamber. Thus, it is imperative to examine the spray characteristics such as spray cone angle, spray tip penetration, spray area and particle droplet size and their influence on engine performance. Spray characteristics of fuel mainly depend on fuel injection pressure, density, viscosity, temperature, ambient pressure and ambient temperature. Among these, fuel injection pressure and temperature are very critical parameters which directly affect the spray structure. SUPERVISOR RECOGNITION
