Doing this correctly is important. Our goals should be efficiency, stability, order, security and suitability to purpose within budget and ahead of schedule. Computing has little intrinsic value until a human makes a better decision based on the information provided by the systems. In a sense, computing can be thought of as an art form which is NOT about technology. In the end, it IS about people – my opinion. Primary Foci: Team Building, UNIX and Linux System Administration and Operations, UNIX/Linux/network Security specialist, teaching and consulting. Security forensics, analysis and remediation, and custom security solutions can be created to order as needed.
Soft skills: strong communication ability and good listener, team player/team builder, able to get more from a team than the sum of it’s parts, highly detail oriented, managing complexity, problem solver Hard technical skills: UNIX & Linux administration & security, networking, coding (many languages including “C” language and all commonly found scripting languages – Bash/Korn/Bourne/Perl), all common Microsoft OS's & applications, Linux kernel development, super-computing clusters, high availability computing, disaster recovery, all internet related technology, support of data bases and web server farms, squid proxies and firewalls, etc.
Highly experienced with “command and control” and configuration management systems such as C3, Ansible, Puppet, Chef, Red Hat Satellite and monitoring tools like Zabbix & Nagios. Currently working in a partly virtualized environment running large scale IBM AIX, bare metal Linux and VMWare ESXi supporting both Linux and Windows VM’s, fairly complex networking across two primary data centers and several hundred stores.
Well Understood Technologies and Operating Systems: ESXI and OpenStack, UNIX (many versions), Linux – Red Hat (many versions), Suse (many versions), Debian, Slackware, BSD variants, SUN Solaris, SUN Solaris x86, HP-UX, IBM AIX (medium experience), NetApps Filers, Veritas Volume Manager, Veritas Cluster Server, Red Hat Cluster Suite, LVM on various Linux systems, multi-pathed SAN attached storage, Microsoft Windows and all common MS applications.
Well Understood Legal Frameworks: SOX (Sarbanes-Oxley), HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability), HITRUST (Health Information Trust), NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology), PCI DSS (Payment Card Industry)
Notable Recent Accomplishments:
* currently helping to manage several hundred AIX and Linux systems in two primary data centers, several secondary data centers, and several hundred stores - (@Harris Teeter/Kroger)
* managed Linux operating systems and Linux level security on approximately 700 individual virtualized Linux machines
(ESXI and OpenStack) – helped to manage the actual physical Cisco UCS chassis’, switches, FI’s, Dell/EMC disk arrays and complex firewall rules across nine data centers – (@Time Warner / Charter) page 1 of 3
