LEADERSHIP AND COMMUNITY SERVICE
Volunteer,
Community Care Clinic Spring 2019
I performed history and physical exams and provided patient education on health promotion and disease prevention for the lower socioeconomic status population of Toledo, Ohio. This opportunity provided experience with patient-provider interaction as well as helped me learn how to think as a medical provider rather than simply answering questions on a test.
COVID Tracing April 2020-June 2020
I assisted the Lucas County Health Department with COVID contact tracing calls. This consisted of contacting people who have tested positive for COVID, inform them of the positive test, and get a history of where they have been for the past two weeks and any symptoms they have had. I then contacted anyone the person may have been in contact with for more than 15 minutes without a mask in the past two weeks and inform them that they have been exposed and should self-quarantine. This opportunity has provided me experience of interacting with patients and patient education.
UTMC Emergency Department January 2018-April 2018
I volunteered in the Emergency Department during my junior year of my undergraduate education. This experience exposed me to the fast paced environment of the emergency room. As a volunteer, I assisted patients with simple tasks such as grabbing a warm blanket and getting the patient water, while also shadowing providers. I was also responsible for cleaning rooms after a patient has been discharged and keeping rooms stocked with supplies and linens. I had the privilege of experiencing how all members of the healthcare system work as a team for each patient. This includes the nursing staff, PA, physician, EMT, and social worker along with consulting any hospital staff required.
