Master’s Thesis and Senior Design

A Design of Experiments to Determine Significant Manufacturing Parameters for Organic Photovoltaics A set of experiments was initiated, intended to allow analysis by the Design of Experiments (DOE) technique. The technique was chosen so that parameter significance could be determined along with the significance of the interaction between parameters. The interaction between parameters is overlooked in traditional, one variable at a time (OVAT) analyses. The parameters investigated were the solid mass blend ratio, solvent additive, concentration of the active layer solution, spin speed, and annealing conditions (both time and temperature). Analysis of the data, so far shows the solvent additive to be dominant (at 85:15, % solvent to % additive ratio used) and that the annealing conditions interact with each other. Senior Design “Tune Squad 7”, Lead Mechanical Engineer -With a budget of $1000, our customer (Bellingers Button Boxes) wished to develop a table top manufacturing system for the production of accordion reed valves. The valves are composed of 2 or 3 different length layers of thin, flexible plastic film adhered at one end. Additionally, the customer wanted to select whether or not there was a hole punched in the adhered end. Functionally, the valve blocks airflow in one direction while allowing air to flow in the opposite direction. The customer also desired that the system be able to run in a single cycle mode as well as a fully automatic mode with a programmable counter to end the automatic run. We were able to deliver a moving prototype, where each individual subsystem worked, as well as most of the subsystem interfaces. The lead mechanical engineer was responsible for the overall mechanical design, the distribution of work among 4 of the 7 members of the team, coordinating with the lead electrical engineer and project leader, and communicating with our customer about engineering requirements.
