Job Description: Diesel Power Plant Operator
Job Summary:
Switchboard Operation -responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the switchboard and monitors the distribution of power to the customer.
Engine Operation - responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the engines and auxiliaries and the fuel treatment system.
Boiler Operation -Responsible for the safe and efficient operations of exhaust gas boiler parameters.
Statement of Duties:
Switchboard:
• synchronizes generating units to the grid during start-up and after the shift engineers gives the clearance;
• adjusts/dispatches and controls engine load according to customer requirements and monitors the system voltage, power factor, frequency and other switchboard parameters. Receive advise from customer to shut down plant or operate on idle mode and relay message to Shift Engineer(SE) for instruction; trips gensets & retains gensets during grid outage in coordination with shift engineer and Electrical Maintenance Department (EMD);
• makes decisions to stop the engine in case of abrupt abnormal condition that may lead to serve damage of equipment;
• records all readings from the switchboard power meter every hour and computes the hourly performance of the units;
• alerts co-operators, shift engineer on any deviation in parameter readings from normal values;
• under instruction from the shift engineer, coordinates with the electrical personnel on the proper sequence of operation to disconnects switches and breakers in the switchyard;
• operates/tends communication equipment, receives/transmit messages;
• observes proper turn-over of duties and responsibilities to incoming shift;
• receives load forecasts & coordinates with customer in dispatching available power generated;
• prepares daily production report in the switchboard operation logbook;
• in-charge of fire alarm whistle in case of fire;
• maintains good housekeeping in the working area;
• performs other tasks that may be assigned.
Engine:
• responsible for the proper start-up and shutdown of engines, air compressors, fuel and lube oil centrifuges/purifiers and other auxiliary equipment; conduct test run of equipment and auxiliaries; conducts leak test & systems oil flushing; conduct engine combustion pressure test, water injection on engine turbo charger blower/compressor side & turbo washing on turbo charger turbine side;
• responsible for the setting-up of valves during starting/stopping of auxiliary pumps & motors of cooling and lubrication systems; coordinates with switchboard operator on the adjustments of L.O temperature & monitors temperature and parameters
• maintains normal lubricating oil levels of engine’s sump tank/wet-sump, turbo chargers, governors, generator bearings, air compressors and centrifuges/purifiers, raw water pump and cooling towers;
• initiates minor repair on the assigned equipment in order to keep them always in good operating condition;
• performs frequent surveillance of engines, auxiliaries, fuel treatment operations; coordinates with the switchboard operator to automatically stop the engine in case of abrupt abnormal conditions; reports immediately to the shift engineer for any abnormality detected;
• monitors the temperature of heavy fuel in service and settling tanks, purifiers and adjusts to the specified temperature if necessary;
• maintains the operating level s of cooling tower & auxiliary tanks;
• maintains air pressure of starting air tanks according to required pressure;
• records shift highlights in the engine operator’s logbook;
• maintains good housekeeping of the working area;
• follow safety rules and regulations and other company procedures;’
• performs other tasks that may be assigned.
Boiler
.Responsible in monitoring boiler parameters,conduct hourly reading of boiler parameters,conduct soot blow and blow down of boiler to maintain its efficient operating condition.
