The substructure was designed for ship impact using six-foot diameter drilled shaft foundations. Continuous post-tensioned spliced I-girder main channel unit was designed using T-187 software, an analysis package that allows time-dependent effects of creep shrinkage and prestress losses, as well as staged construction. Substructure analyzed using finite element model accounting for soil structure interaction using non-linear soil springs. Superstructure interaction included through complete modeling of deck and girder elements. Analysis completed using GTSTRUDL.

Construction Engineering

Storrow Drive Bridge Erection, Boston, Mass – Structural Engineer responsible for the phased erection of one of the widest steel box girder bridges in the country. Steel box was erected in segments, using longitudinal and transverse splices for site assembly of the box sections. Once continuous, supports were lowered to induce design moments at the splice points, and precamber the box.

Garcon Point Bridge, Santa Rosa County – Structural Engineer responsible for design of the erection truss used for span-by-span construction of the concrete segmental bridge. Erection of the bridge using the under-slung truss allowed one 140-foot span to be erected and post-tensioned each week, setting a new record for span-by-span construction.

Pascagoula River Bridge, Pascagoula, Mississippi – Structural Engineer responsible for redesign of the temporary shoring for erection of continuous post-tensioned spliced I-girder bridge. Sequence of erection plan for the main channel unit of the bridge was extensively revised to facilitate erection and permit construction without use of temporary piling in the river. Significant cost savings were realized.
