Employer: NBC Universal 04/2006 – 03/2008

Role: Senior Storage Engineer/Architect; Project Manager Location: Studio City, California

• Developed a tiered storage strategy for NBC Universal reducing the overall TCO for storage across numerous business groups. Standardized storage platforms down to three major lanes of storage minimizing the order to delivery time by working with our major storage vendors to develop standard SKUs for ordering new equipment and upgrading existing equipment. Worked closely with finance and my management to prioritize numerous projects. The strategy lifecycle had a pre-determined planned birth to expiration of data which in turned defined retention policies and archiving methods used.

• Minimized downtime for SAP/Oracle applications by implementing storage guidelines, a standardized LUN layout and file system design. The SAP ecosystem was two 50TB; one for domestic and one for overseas. These guidelines made the production, development and test environments more efficient resulting in fewer bug reports in the production environment.

• Project manager for RecoverPoint continuous data protection and replication of NBC Universal’s business critical data. Because of SOX requirements and the inability to use traditional backup and recovery methods, we selected RecoverPoint for the data protect of critical data.

• Doubled the performance of a large DB2 database environment by working in a cross-functional group to determine and eliminate bottlenecks. As a result 30% -40% more transactions were processed per week.

• Developed high availability, disaster recovery and business continuity plans for the protection of NBC Universal’s business critical systems. Designed a replication strategy for replicated broadcast, data audio and movie assets. Established a replication methodology to protect NBC’s SAP/Oracle and DB2 systems in case of a datacenter disaster and for SOX and other regulatory compliance testing. Business critical data was replicated 2500 Miles away to a GE disaster recovery facility.

• Deployed EMC’s ECC product to help determine the trend for growth of the storage infrastructure as well as to quickly determine “hot spots” within the SAN infrastructure. After deploying ECC, ECC identified almost 80TB of orphaned storage and identified storage platforms that were in need of firmware upgrades.

• Ordered, deployed, and configured NAS, SAN storage, SAN switching and backup library for NBC Universal’s co-location site which served our external facing web sites in preparation for expansion of NBC Universal’s web servers and in support of the 2008 Summer Olympics. Consulted with the other IT organizations to rapidly deploy the storage infrastructure which supported the webcast of 2008 Summer Olympics.

• Responsible for capacity planning, backup and restore process design, performance analysis, and developing data disaster recovery plans for the different tiers of storage which reduced downtime and reduced penalties by not meeting our service level agreements. Planned for the capacity growth of all of the storage platforms across NBC’s SAN and NAS storage environments globally while taking into account the availability of the local facilities to accept more storage capacity. Planned, deployed, and managed over 200TB of Tier1 SAN, 200TB of NetApp NAS, and 400TB of Isilon NAS Storage according NBC Universal’s storage guidelines. With the guidelines in place, the deployment of tiered storage was reduced from 3 months down to 2 weeks. Procurement to installation process was reduced to 2 weeks or less.

• I was NBC Universal’s subject matter expert on storage, I participated in number proof of concept evaluations using Six Sigma and Lean processes. VMware evaluations on NAS versus SAN performance were performed to determine the operational and business viability of replicating guest operating systems to NBC Universal’s disaster recovery site. Developed separate plans for NAS and SAN deployments for existing and new deployments of VMware. Long distance, large volume replication testing was conducted across the WAN to determine the loading on the network. Host based and storage platform replication was also tested.

• Worked in a multi
