PERSONAL NARRATIVE

I am a 28 + year veteran of critical care nursing, who has achieved my Family Nurse Practitioner

Degree from DeSales University in 2007. I achieved a 3.87 GPA upon graduation. My education at DeSales University primarily trained me for the office-type setting, however, the abundance of my nursing career has been in the field of Critical Care, hospital-based practice. I currently work full time in a busy Family Practice in Brodheadsville, Pa. My duties include the management of care for people ages newborn through geriatric. I previously worked full time 12 hour nightshifts as a CRNP for the non-teaching Pulmonary Critical Care team at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Allentown, Pennsylvania, until February 2015. In the hospital ICU, I was responsible for independently caring for patients in the NSICU and CICU, however, my prior experiences included MICU/SICU, TNICU, CICU, OHU, and NSICU. My duties include performing H&P’s, consultations, inserting central lines, emergent intubations, participating in Rapid Response team situations, and coordinating patient care with bedside nurses and collaborating physicians and surgeons during the nighttime hours. I am able to manage a census of 20, and at times 35+ critical care patients, independently. Our hospital is unique, in that we have a remote Tele- ICU, in which a physician is readily available should I need assistance.

Upon returning to work after the birth of our son, I decided to transition my full time status to dayshifts in the office setting, as there was no dayshift position available in the ICU. I currently maintain proficiency with my critical care skills by working per diem in the ICU at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Pocono. I work approximately 6-8 shifts a month, on the nightshift.

In anticipation of the new Concensus Model of Nursing, I proactively completed my Adult-Gero Acute Care NP degree from Hospital University of Pennsylvania nursing program. I completed the program with an A= average.

I also have experience working in the Urgent Care setting, as well as, the Family Practice setting, for the past 13 years, providing care for children and adults from newborn to Geriatric lifespan. My duties include Well visits, Sick visits, and Chronic disease management. In this setting, I worked completely independently, as my collaborating physician was maintaining an additional practice in Philadelphia.

I have experience with Heart Failure patients and extensive experience with the post-operative Open Heart surgery patient population. I have had the opportunity to manage post-operative Open Heart patients in an outpatient clinic setting as well. In 2007, I organized and developed a clinic for Open Heart surgery patients at a brand new hospital program in the Pocono region. My duties included bedside rounds in the ICU, patient management through bedside a well as, telephone orders, and independent office visits of the post-operative patient. I provided education to staff at local rehabilitation facilities, as well as, conducting home visits to patients in need (low economic status). One of my greatest accomplishments was the development of a Comprehensive Guide to patients undergoing cardiac surgery. The book includes pre-operative, intra-operative, post-operative, and discharge information and assessments.

I have abundant clinical experience with complex Open Heart patients, including valve replacements, mid-CABG, traditional CABG, thoracotomy patients, VATS procedures, and esophago-gastrectomy bypass patients. I have also experienced the traditional ICU unit, as well as MICU, SICU, and Neuroscience ICU’s. I have had much experience with vascular-surgical patients in the critical care setting. As a Registered Nurse, prior to obtaining my NP license, my Float Pool experience enabled me to become proficient in ED nursing and Medical Surgical nursing.

I have had the opportunity to work in various hospital settings which have been granted the prestigious Magnet status. These facilities are truly unique in that, they truly support and promote continuing education and Advanced Practice degrees. Working alongside well educated individuals allowed me to grow and maintain cutting edge competency in the Critical Care setting.

I have maintained proficiency with electronic chart documentation using both the EClinical and most recently, EPIC, platforms. Over the past 6 months, I have become proficient with virtual patient visits by Duo, and Facetime, as a result of restrictions placed upon our practice form the COVID pandemic.

I truly enjoy my job in the medical profession and am proud of my accomplishments as a highly-regarded CRNP. I possess important qualities such as honesty and integrity. I strive to be a role model for the Registered Nurses and Nurse Practitioners with whom I work with on a daily basis. I am confident that my diverse skills including both the Critical Care, as well as, Family Practice setting would set me apart from other nurse practitioners.

Being dual –Boarded, however, requires me to maintain clinical competency in both the outpatient and in-patient settings. This can create quite a challenge for me. I currently work full-time outpatient and part-time inpatient.

In 2013, I began volunteering medical care services for the Safe Harbor Clinic, in Easton Pa. The clinic is staffed by Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, and Physicians. This is one of my most rewarding accomplishments. I voluntarily relinquished this position to pursue other career goals.

Currently, I am working as a Collaborator for a Lippincott Nurse Practitioner Board Review Book. The book is scheduled to be published before the end of this year 2020.

On a personal note, I have been married for 15 years and in 2014, my husband and I adopted our first child after six long years of the adoption process. I love being a mother to our son, Chase. My husband and I loved to travel and tour countries outside of the United States, before Chase came along. We enjoy spending time at our home in the Outer Banks area whenever time allows. I enjoy exercising, hiking, and hanging out with our Labrador and two giant English Mastiffs, one of which is a TriPawd after having her leg amputated for a diagnosis of osteosarcoma. I currently am an entrepreneur, working with a group of Lehigh Engineering students to develop a prototype canine carrier system for handicapped and elderly large and giant breed dogs. I hope to manufacture within the next few years and improve the lives of pets around the world!
