Hello, my name is James Calcut. I am a United States Army Veteran that is presently working as a Nurse Practitioner in the Emergency Department of Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point. I served in the Army for 7 years as an infantryman and Special Forces Weapons Sergeant, which means I have an excellent work ethic, and work well in a team environment. While serving as an Infantryman in the 25th Infantry Division, I was qualified for 4 years as a Combat Lifesaver, and 2 years as a Squad First Responder. Combat Lifesavers are in charge of treating soldiers who have become wounded on the battlefield. We received intensive training on hemorrhage control, tourniquet application, intravenous (IV) fluid implementation, caring for spinal and head injuries, mouth-to- mouth resuscitation, first aid for bleeding, shock, fractures, and nerve agent injuries, and transportation of casualties (ambulation). Squad First Responders receive the next level of training. We received extensive training on advanced IV implementation, to include administering IV's in the dark while wearing night vision goggles, advanced airway control, to include the use of nasal pharyngeal tubes, oral pharyngeal tubes, and crycothyrotomies, and the treatment of tension pneumothorax via needle decompression. After training, we were called to use these skills in our units, performing countless practical field exercises.
