In-depth understanding of minerals, rocks, maps, and aerial and satellite photos, as well as resources, structure, and internal composition.

Knowledge of the origin and evolution of life on Earth by reviewing fossil record, sedimentary rocks, plate tectonics, evolution, and climate change.

Ability to apply the principles of optical mineralogy and the microscopic determination of nonopaque minerals, as well as crystallography, crystal chemistry, and the physical and optical properties of minerals.

Adeptness in using global positioning system (GPS) and geographic information system (GIS) by querying, analyzing, and creating data through industry standard software.

Strong grasp of atmospheric sciences and how the energy from the Sun shapes the weather on the Earth, from weather prediction to hurricanes forecast.
