Experience Highlights
Senior Thesis (2018-2019)
One year project involving environmental focused research with design, calculations and budget for an aerobic treatment system including aeration and nitrification with recycle followed by a clarifier and sandbag filter before redistribution. This system would result in the purification of coffee wastewater effluent to be redistributed in a river in Nicaragua. The major issues concerning the water are the high amounts of BOD and COD concentrations and the acidic pH. The BOD and COD concentrations went from 3510 mg/l and 5850 mg/l to 8mg/ and 13mg/l respectively. Another major issue was the pH that was very acidic at 4 and the final effluent came out with a pH of 7. These findings can be used for most coffee mills in third world countries for an affordable water treatment process. The project concluded in a bound thesis approved by the advisor and head of the environmental engineering department with the highest commendation.
Unit Operations (January – May 2018)
Conduct laboratory work and hands on construction of water treatment processes including Plug Flow Reactor, Flocculation and Sedimentation Tank and a Sand Filter. Resolve problem statements and projects within a time limit. Participate in group meetings and work closely with other students on proposals, projects, reports and presentations. Air Resource Modeling (August – December 2018)
Creating official construction (NRS) permit according to 20.2.72 NMAC for a gas extraction plant in rural New Mexico. Worked with a consulting firm on permits and air modeling (AERMOD) for the impact report. Ran lab experiments using a Nephelometer and Sunphotometer. Miguel San+llanes Lopez
