As a recently retired Physician Assistant from the U.S. Air Force with 30 years of service, I am looking for opportunities to offer my extensive experience in orthopaedic surgery to civilian orthopaedic centers. After joining the USAF in 1990, and being assigned to the aeromedical field, I rapidly advanced through ranks serving with Special Operations units. During that time, my medical abilities were recognized, and I was recommended for the Interservice Physician Assistant Program (IPAP). Upon graduating that program, I received my Masters in PA Studies, and have been NCCPA Certified since 2006. After my certification, I have worked in Primary Care and Family Practice at several different duty assignments until 2012. At that time, I was selected by Duke University to be the first member ever to go through their Physician Assistant Orthopaedic Surgery Fellowship, graduating in Aug 2013, and have been working in Orthopaedic surgery until my recent retirement from active duty.
In my last tour of duty from August 2016 to May 2020, I worked at Eglin Air Force Base, FL in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, working with 6 surgeons and 4 other PA’s. During this tour, I also performed an autonomous outpatient clinic and inpatient hospital duties which included dictating clinic visits, admission and preoperative/postoperative history and physicals, writing orders and daily progress notes, preparing discharge summaries, and giving discharge instructions to patients. I conducted rounds on inpatients and reported the findings to the surgeon. In addition to having a general orthopaedic clinic and surgical assist schedule, during the last two years of this tour I was chosen to work directly with the hand surgeon conducting a weekly concurrent hand clinic and assisting him in the operating room allowing a more cohesive and comprehensive hand service. For the final 6 months before retirement, I was sought out to work very closely with the newly assigned fellowship trained sports medicine surgeon on complex clinical and surgical cases, as well as our newly graduated surgeon on total joint arthroplasty.
My surgical first assistant duties during this tour included assisting in trauma, sports, hand, hip arthroscopy, and total joint arthroplasty with exposure, hemostasis, wound closure, and other functions requested by the surgeon to carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. I performed wound closure, wound management, wound debridement, incision and drainage of superficial soft tissue infections, excision of lesions (including skin, foreign body, superficial mass, cyst and nails), K-wire and hardware removal procedures, all without direct supervision. I also performed diagnostic interpretation of laboratory results, radiographs, MRI, CT and Bone Scans.
Therapeutic procedures included digital blocks, local infiltrating anesthesia, joint and bursa aspirations, closed reduction of fractures and dislocations, injection of joints, bursa, tendon sheaths, trigger points, and applying extremity braces, casts and splints as indicated. I helped manage postoperative inpatient’s care to include cardiac, pulmonary issues, as well as their comorbid conditions such as hypertension and diabetes during their hospital stay. Additional duties I performed included being first call for Emergency Room (ER) Orthopaedic emergencies.
I truly enjoy all aspects of providing Orthopaedic care, priding myself in being a detail-oriented and extremely hardworking provider who constantly seeks knowledge to improve my capabilities I find this field to be extremely rewarding and would look forward to discussing the opportunity of joining your team, and am confident I would be a strong addition to your practice. Thank you in advance for your time and consideration. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Steven L. Bryant, PA-C
