It has equipped me with skill sets to work and operate seamlessly across the three platforms that define contemporary journalism. February 2018-Present: Independent Journalist & Content Consultant At present, I am engaged as Contributing Editor at gfiles magazine (India’s first magazine on governance and bureaucracy). The role involves commissioning stories, rewriting and fact- checking and reporting. I have over a dozen cover stories, focusing on important governance issues, investigations and politics, to my credit during this period. Additionally, I have bylines in Outlook, The Qunit, Newsclick, The Man and Man’s World among others publications.
As a content consultant, I am providing content management services to multiple corporate houses and sports events. I have also been contracted by Sony Ten television channel to produce video programmes for the Professional Golf Tour of India. August 2016-January 2018: Managing Editor, Sports Illustrated (India) The role involved handling the magazine’s day-to-day affairs that included editorial and administrative responsibilities. On the editorial side, I was responsible right from commissioning stories to putting the issue to bed. On the administrative side, I was responsible for budgeting, allocating assignments, performance appraisals and monitoring costs. I piloted SI India’s digital initiatives, including developing the architecture of SI India’s website and overall supervision and content generation for social media platforms. September 2014–July 2016: Independent journalist
Role: As an independent journalist, I have been contributing news and sports features to various magazines such as the Hindustan Times, Mid-Day, Sports Illustrated India, Maxim, The Man and AutoX to name a few. I was a guest lecturer in the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism at the Amity University. April 2012–August 2014 (Chief Copy Editor, Auto Bild—India Today Group) Role: Responsible for coordinating with the team of reporters, rewriting, copy editing, sourcing stories from various international editions, overseeing layout and packaging, maintaining production deadlines, drawing up the editorial calendar and forward planning. Additional responsibility: Piloted the launch of the auto channel on the India Today Group website and kick-started Auto Bild India’s presence on television and social media. October 2009–January 2012 (Senior Associate Editor, Media Transasia) Role: Independently responsible for editing Golf Style magazine, commissioning writers and photographers for stories, commissioning columns, rewriting, copy editing and monitoring the editorial budget on monthly basis.
Additional responsibility: Senior writer for Sports Illustrated India and editorial consultant for other group magazines such as Discover India and Swagat. August 2008–September 2009 (Head Sports Programming, News X) Role: Responsible for sports programming and special shows, including the launch of India’s first motor sports show, Full Throttle. The show stayed in the number three spot across all categories in terms of TRP ratings for over nine weeks following its launch. April–July 2008 (Principal Correspondent, The Times of India, Chennai) Role: Part of the core editorial team that launched the Chennai edition of the paper in April 2008. This was my second launch experience following the re-launch of the Chandigarh edition in 2004. I was responsible for planning and packaging of the sports pages apart from coordinating the entire motor sports coverage across the country. August 2004–March 2008 (Sports Editor, The Times of India, Chandigarh) Role: Responsible for reporting, managing the team of reporters and producing the sports pages. Was also responsible for developing special story packages for the region north of Chandigarh, including Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu. Part of the core team that conceptualised, launched and consolidated the city supplement, The Times of Chandigarh – a news-driven, city-centric pullout. Additional responsibility: Anchored the technology and gadgets page for more than two years.
January 2002–August 2004
Reporter-at-large with Hindustantimes.com, doing in-depth investigative stories for the website. I have reported extensively on the narcotics mafia in North India, the timber mafia in Uttarakhand, the coal mafia in Bihar and Jharkhand, and wildlife criminals trading in animal body parts.
