WORK
EXPERIENCE
Paul Smith’s College & New York State Department of Health September-December 2019 Science Capstone: GIS tech. of the group
I was part of a group of 17 students that was tasked in locating emergent tick sites in the Adirondack park particularly Franklin and Hamilton county. My sub-group oversaw actively going out and finding sites as well as monitoring the survey I created with Survey123. At the end of this project I created a model from the data gathered to contribute to my sub-groups’ final presentation. Our presentation along side the other two groups was about public outreach and an overview of our efforts towards the NYSDH goals. The following link provides more detailed explanation on my work in this project: https://sites.google.com/site/kegankgis/
Academic Success Center, Paul Smith’s College September- May only 2017-2019
Tutor for Chemistry, GIS, and Algebra
I prepared course material for students to go over in my sessions. I tried to keep every student my sessions properly motivated to do work outside of the sessions to build their confidence and knowledge towards the subject they were struggling with. I used a variety of teaching methods to cater towards the different needs of the students in each session and each subject in hopes of helping them improve their overall grade in the course.
Cobleskill Stone Products, Oneonta, NY June-August only of 2017-2019
Roadcrew laborer
I prepped all the equipment before the job started in the morning by loading up the paver with the needed equipment and hooked up all of the automated auger systems for the screed operators. I shoveled black top in a timely fashion in the event of the screed leaving a gap between the road and the curb to keep the crew moving. I guided trucks up to the paver and monitored how much black top was being dumped into the paver. I collected tickets that I used to calculate the job tonnages for the job at hand and would cut trucks off as needed.
Quality Control/ Groundman June-August only of 2016
I measured the quality of the blacktop being produced by the two plants at the job location. I checked the temperature of the loads periodically to ensure the product was not too cold or too hot which would reduce the quality of the final product. I tested the gradation of the aggregate going into the mixes to ensure proper ratios of the different size stones and type of stone was being used for that specific mix design. I tested the compaction and air voids of the final product throughout the day to ensure they were within spec. As a groundman I ensured the plant operated smoothly and kept the area clean of all hazards, when and if the plant broke down, I would work quickly alongside my coworkers to get the plant up and running as fast as possible.
Otschodela Council, Henderson Scout Reservation, Portland, NY July-August of 2011- 2015
Camp Counselor
I maintained a safe environment for campers while I organized recreational activities to help campers get the best experience possible during their time at camp. I taught groups of kids the basics in camping, wilderness survival, knot tying, orienteering, fire building, water rescue, outdoor code, and leave no trace. This was an effort to prepare them for future experiences they might have had as their time as a scout or even in future adventures.
