Apphosting:
Customers need to know the locations in which their app data is stored when they use cloud applications. We gather a list of IPs by resolving the known domains of the app. Then we use geolocation data of these IPs to find the list of countries from which the app's data is served.
Since an app can be accessed from any location, it is highly likely that the data is being served from multiple geographies for localized content and latency requirements. To get the exhaustive list of IP addresses associated with each unique domain of the app, we will need to resolve the domains from multiple locations.
This is achieved by setting up 5 AWS instances in the different locations. Once we have the list of IPs for each app, we use GeoIP2 from MaxMind to find the location and hosting provider of these IPs.
Blacklist:
Worked on content creation for discovery called blacklist by automating the mapping of domain to cloud application using python. For discovery to identify the app usage from the log what customer uploaded. Blacklist used to identify the app usage based on domain name. Each release we add crawled output for newly added apps to blacklist. To improve discovery, we have added new domains for an app using SAN domains from the SSL certificate. As a first step, we have added geo-specific domains like .jp, .in from the certs automatically. We have also added SAN domains for P1 apps after manually comparing the new domains with existing app domains.
