Resume:

SAHADEV CHIRAYATH SE

PROFESSIONAL SUMMARY

I am a registered structural engineer in the San Francisco Bay Area with over 35 years of experience in the industrial, municipal and commercial sectors. I am driven toward complex engineering challenges and thrive leading and working with large design teams. Over my career, I have managed over $1B in structural projects at two of the nation's top engineering firms, including Flour and HDR. My work includes leading such projects as the Cleveland Clinic in Abu Dhabi, the largest centrifuge project in California for the Orange County Sanitation District, a number of BART station modernizations, and DHS-funded anti-terrorism marine barriers for the Northern California Transit Agency.

As an experienced SE, I also enjoy training and mentoring junior engineers, have taught classes for the California Professional Engineering Exam, and am active in the San Diego chapter of Engineers Without Borders. In 2013, I led a team for Engineers Without Borders to Andhra Pradesh, India, where we designed and built affordable housing and a reverse osmosis system for an entire community. My specialties are in structural engineering management, project management and design, sanitary structures, and environmental engineering and design.

Finally, I enjoy spending time with my two children in San Francisco. I was an avid cyclist (centuries, double centuries) and a ride from the Grand Canyon to Tucson. In my retirement I (perhaps by delusion) I am setting my sights on triathlons.

Self-employed

As a consulting structural engineer in the San Francisco Bay Area, I have been working on numerous projects over the past 3 years:

AEPC engineering San Ramon,CA

Lead SE for the design of a new Ascent Technologies Datacenter – a large CMU building housing banks of servers. UPS & BestBuy design of equipment supports and performing overall stability analysis for conveyor material handling functions.

US Coast Guard Oakland, CA SE for planning compliance with ASCE 41-13 and 41-17 seismic retrofit standards for 20 Coast Guard facilities on the west coast.

TESLA Giga factory, Fremont. CA One of 2 California SE’s doing facilities engineering for crash test storage, new mezzanines, paint storage tank anchorage and QC of work done by other Tesla structural engineers.

ENGINEERS WITHOUT BORDERS USA January 2013 – 2015 off and on.

Senior Structural Engineer

I am passionate about spreading good engineering practices to communities in need. Since 2013, I have been active in the San Diego chapter of Engineers Without Borders. In 2014, I led a team for Engineers Without Borders to Andhra Pradesh, India, where we designed and built affordable housing and a reverse osmosis system for an entire community.

KKCS October 2014 - December 2017Senior Project Manager & Structural Engineer

As Senior Project Manager & Structural Engineer at KKCS, I led and worked on a number of projects for the Bay Area Rapid Transit System (BART), including the El Cerrito Del Norte Station Modernization, Fire Protection Engineering/Fire Alarm Replacement Systems Design, and the Fairfield Station Intermodal Station.

Principally I provided structural design services for the construction of BART’s San Francisco Transition Structure Marine Barrier project (SFTS-MB). The SFTS-MB is a one-of-a-kind structure that provides security for BART’s Transbay Tube. The submerged steel structure is designed to absorb underwater blast loads from a possible terrorist attack. Blast loading profiles and magnitudes were developed for KKCS by Lawrence Livermore Laboratories. I was responsible for reviewing and responding to contractor’s RFIs; and approving contractor’s submittals; providing structural analysis and assessments as requested by BART’s Project Manager and Lead Structural Engineer; attending construction meetings to assist in project coordination; and providing recommendations for materials testing.. The security features incorporated an early warning system for alerting Central Control of attack and evaluates sensitive areas prior to flooding. The barrier structure was designed for ease of construction, customized to fit into existing space, and included seawater corrosion-resistant materials. The estimated construction value is approximately $40-50 million.

BROWN & CALDWELL September 2012 - October 2014 Supervising Structural Engineer

At Brown & Caldwell, I was the Lead Structural Engineer for the design of a five-centrifuge facility. The 45-foot-high concrete structure (P2-92) consisted of special concrete shear walls, a 50-foot span, 15-ton crane, related pipe-way bridges, and connections to existing structures at OCSD Plant 2.

HDR Engineering January 2007 - September 2012

Senior Structural Engineer

Senior Structural Engineer for the $900MM Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi. Designed and detailed lateral force transfer between a 20 story high-rise hospital structure to a 4 story low-rise retail and parking structure. Senior Structural Engineer, Orange County Sanitation District. Led the design and development of a $130 MM building (P1-101)housing centrifuges and related equipment. The 70-foot-high structure consisted of a steel and concrete structure, a 90-foot span, 15-ton crane, related pipe-way bridges, and connections to existing structures at OCSD Plant 1.

Software used: ETABS, SAP and REVIT. Software used: ETABS, SAP and REVIT. Senior Transportation Structural Engineer, North County Transit District (NCTD), San Diego. Led the development of seismic design criteria for 6 different bridges carrying commuter rail and AMTRAK for NCTD.
