Production of Poly Lactic Acid from a Lactic Acid Feedstock – Senior Design Fall 2019

• Lead a team of six to design and evaluate four alternative production processes of poly lactic acid.

• Utilized SMART Design objectives and 20-year cash flow diagrams with chemistry and kinetics research.

• Modeled two viable methods – the direct polymerization of lactic acid to polylactic acid (PLA), and a ring opening polymerization through a lactide intermediate in Aspen Plus.

• Created PFD and P&ID for two alternatives of each process, a higher capital expense versus a higher operating.

• Determined capital and operation cost for each alternative process through use of industry standard heuristics.

• Compiled findings in a technical report submitted to a faculty administrator acting as a stakeholder. Colorado School of Mines Alumni Mentorship Program – Founder Fall 2019

• Identified a student body need for guidance when transitioning into the workforce.

• Created a proto-type network model by facilitating student-mentor connections and assessed its effectiveness.

• Lead a team of four to create a network of 60 CSM alumni and students.
