DETAILED JOB DESCRIPTION
OPERATING THATRE CIRCULATING NURSE
SCRUB NURSE
• Check and prepare the needed instrument sets and supplementary items in the surgeon’s preference card.
• Check the sterilization indicators on all instrument sets and supplementary items to be used.
• Demonstrate proper scrubbing in adherence to Medical City Wide Policy and Procedure.
• Maintain sterility of all surgical fields for the entire procedure or surgery.
• Count audibly with the circulating nurse all instrument sets, swabs, sharps and supplementary item.
• Handover to circulating nurse any surgical specimen/s and after surgery log in the specimen logbook and ensure that the specimen/s is collected by the laboratory department staff.
• Dispose all instruments, swabs, sharps after the surgery or procedure accordingly.
• Ensure that all swabs, instruments, supplementary items from the previous case are removed and the room totally cleanse before the next patient is brought into the theatre room.
CIRCULATING NURSE
• Ensure the cleanliness of the theatre room before pushing in the patient.
• Check the safety checklist before the start of the theatre list
• Transfer the patient from the holding area to the theatre room with the main responsible surgeon(MRS) and the main responsible anesthesia(MRA).
• Assist the patient in transferring from the trolley to the operating table.
• Monitor the patient until patient is fully anesthetized.
• Assist the surgeon and the anesthetist in the positioning of the patient ensuring all limbs are supported, padded and secured on the operating table.
• Check instruments, swabs, sharps and other supplementary items with scrub nurse audibly and record in the white wipe board.
• Ensure that the correct size of diathermy pad is properly applied to the patient.
• Conduct time-out before skin incision using the surgical safety checklist.
• Provide additional items needed.
• Monitor the patient positioning throughout the operative procedure to ensure patient’s safety.
• Receive surgical specimen/s from the scrub nurse.
• Monitor any item that drops on the floor from the surgical field and informs the scrub nurse.
• Clean the patient and observe privacy after surgery.
• Check the necessary instrument sets and supplementary items needed for the next surgery.
• Handover to the recovery room nurse together with the main responsible anesthetist (MRA).
