Senior Classification Officer – Baker Correctional Institution, Sanderson, FL 2014 – Present

Oversee and complete various projects to streamline the management of incarcerated inmates. Work and communicate with inmates to discuss goals, adjustment to institutional life, and methods for improved transition during and after their incarceration. Spearhead the research and analysis of department policies, administrative rules, and state and federal regulations in order to better answer and resolve requests and grievances. Review inmate status and progress, and make recommendations for work release, transfer, and re-entry.

Developed and organized quarterly seminars focused on re-entry, which facilitated public speaking and open discussion about issues and improved the re-entry process for inmates which resulted in reduced inmate recidivism.

Assist and provide about to be released inmates with resources necessary for successful reintegration back into society by functioning as the release officer resulting in the reduction of inmate recidivism which include housing, employment, and food assistance.

Heavily contributed to effective adherence to the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) across the entire institution thereby maintaining federal law requirements regarding PREA.

Regularly met with inmates to discuss and resolve issues, help them set and achieve goals, and prepare them for successful re-entry upon release. Managed institutional job assignments for inmates on a weekly basis. Investigated and resolved inmate grievances at the informal and formal level thereby resulting in the reduction of grievances on caseload. Conducted background checks of potential inmate visitors for FCIC/NCIC warrants and past criminal offenses.

Successfully collaborated with the educational department to assign inmates educational and vocational job assignments that fit their personalities and strengths.

Developed and implemented various organizational methods to ensure inmate data and files were accurate and thorough, particularly in the case of sentence changes.

Classification Officer – Indian River Correctional Institution, Vero Beach, FL 2011 – 2012

Managed, evaluated, and made recommendations for youth-aged inmates at this facility. Worked closely with each youth to determine and set goals, assess and lead development, field requests, and answer any questions. Determined appropriate custody and housing level for each youth, worked with the courts and various law enforcement agencies to gather information pertinent to youth management, and conducted background checks of potential inmate visitors via CJIS for FCIC/NCIC warrants and past criminal offenses.

Collaborated with parents, legal guardians, or emergency contacts of youth offenders for optimal progress and development, and to keep guardians and parents informed and up-to-date.

Developed and led weekly mentoring sessions with a select group of youth offenders, and helped teach weekly character development classes for a select group of youth offenders resulting in much improved positive outlook and behavior of the youthful offenders.
