ESL Instructor, Foundation Communities, 2011-2020

Teach two adult ESL classes four days a week as part of a non-profit program. Assisted in the creation of a multilevel ESL curriculum for use in expanding the program to include volunteer instructors. Guide and oversee classroom volunteers.

High Dosage Bilingual Tutor, Sylvan Learning, 2013-2014.

Instructed second grade students at two AISD elementary schools. Focused on improving reading skills through phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, comprehension and increased vocabulary. Tutor sessions carried out in Spanish or English, depending on language of student instruction. Administered progress monitoring tests: DIBELS, IDEL and GRADE.

High Dosage English/Language Arts Tutor, Sylvan Learning, 2013.

Intensive skills-based tutoring of students at Travis High School who initially failed the state standardized test in Reading. Prepared incoming freshman for high school through intensive development of writing skills. Created fresh tutoring materials based on Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills standards.

Produced three levels of curriculum and a placement test for use in East Austin Children’s Promise adult ESL classes.

Responsible for all hiring, training, and professional development of department personnel. Managed a staff of 10 part-time and full-time instructors. Responsible for all class scheduling, textbook ordering, and grade assignments. Developed and implemented a sui generis ESL curriculum. Instructed multiple levels of adult English language learners in key areas of language development. During first year of tenure, improved student retention by 100%.

Bilingual 5th Grade Teacher, Austin Independent School District (AISD), T.A. Brown Elementary, 2006-2007

Prepared lesson plans aligned with Texas state standards for all key areas of elementary education and instructed a class of 19 bilingual students in Spanish and English. Performed data analysis to determine academic grouping and prepare classroom lessons and interventions. Participated as an active member of the Community Involvement Committee.

Texas Teaching Fellows is a highly selective non-profit alternative certification program dedicated to bringing achievement-oriented individuals into Texas’ most high-need schools and subject areas. In addition to the summer intensive program and bi-weekly seminars throughout the school year, I was a student teacher for an AISD Pre-1st class at Govalle Elementary.

Collaborated with EHS program owners to overhaul individual site information systems and develop new department-wide systems in

their place. Orchestrated the donation of over 300 used binders to non-profit organizations and educational institutions.

Research Assistant to Jessica Hay, Doctoral Candidate in Psychology, University of Texas at Austin. (2004)

Coordinated logistics for and administered a computer-based psychology/language experiment to recently-arrived Spanish speakers, including locating and reserving quiet locations to administer the test.

Fair Housing Specialist, Austin Tenants’ Council. (2003-2004)

Provided outreach and assistance as a case manager/counselor to individuals alleging housing discrimination or tenancy problems.

Processed successful HUD discrimination complaint resulting in $9,000 settlement for the client.

Field Organizer, Consumers Union. (2003)

Led an awareness campaign among manufactured home owners and tenants of their rights under Texas law through community outreach and dissemination of relevant information produced by Consumers Union. Developed and managed strategic planning for building a 150-member manufactured home owners’ and tenants’ association.

Conducted performance audit and co-authored a report on the state’s Petroleum Storage Tank (PST) program. Analyzed biennial budgets and evaluated appropriations requests of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) and Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ).

Performed a market analysis of 20 competitors and produced a report on web-based training products. Researched and co-authored a book chapter on coalition building between the public and private sectors.

Researcher/Intern, Office of the Attorney General, State of São Paulo, Environment Division. (1999)

Interviewed prominent policymakers and academics to develop research strategy plan. Met with over 30 stakeholders to discuss legislation, implementation and development issues in the Amazon. Produced a widely-distributed report on legislative efforts to regulate access to genetic resources in Brazil.

Researcher, Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), Office of Border Affairs. (1998)

Analyzed state and federal laws and regulations relating to hazardous waste and waste transport. Collaborated with U.S. and Mexican government agency representatives to identify transport strategies. Co-authored a report on the Electronic Tracking of Hazardous Waste from Maquiladoras.

Community Activities

Founding Board Member, Projects Committee Chair, Rainforest Partnership. Working in support of Rainforest Partnership, a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation dedicated to raising awareness of the role of deforestation in global climate change. (2007-2011)

Board Member, Hostelling International Southwest Texas Council. Supported the mission of HI to “help all, especially the young, gain a greater understanding of the world and its people through hostelling,” as a board member and member of the marketing and fundraising committees. (2005-2007)
