The Youth & Social Innovation program (YSI) focuses on the development of young people (ages eight to 25). The curriculum circulates around understanding dynamic processes of, social, biological, emotional, and cognitive development. The focus is on how youths’ assets and school/community settings influence their outcomes. The social innovation aspect of YSI includes enhancing youth development with tools that refine youth experiences or programs, by considering what works for different youth in diverse settings and contexts. YSI also covers the impact of different school policies on youth, and revolves around experimental learning. Experimental learning involves students in working in the Charlottesville community, joining faculty-led research, and designing programs that address issues youth face. Capstone Project, Fall 2018
Worked on a research team with other University of Virginia students on a project that focused on the achievement of African American males, ages 14 years to 24 years, and living in the Charlottesville, Virginia community. Throughout the semester, the team compiled research on existing innovations that were successful in aiding the target group. At the end of the semester, the research team submitted to Mr. Daniel Fairley, Youth Opportunity Coordinator of Charlottesville, the compiled data from both community stakeholders and published research. The data will be used to plan future programs for young African American males within the Charlottesville community. Athletes Committed to Education, Spring 2017 - Spring 2019 As an Education, Youth & Social Innovation major, worked with area public school children. More specifically, worked with three 4th grade classes at Jackson-Via Elementary School up to twice a week assisting the classroom teachers, and helping the students transition to the next grade level through mentoring and tutoring.
I Am More, Spring 2017 - Fall 2018
Participated in the I Am More selective program for student-athletes at UVA. It is a leadership and professional development program that offers resume writing clinics, mock interviews, suggestions for personal and online branding, and exposure to UVA Alumni/Donors.
FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes), 2017- 2019 Active member of the FCA, a group of coaches and student-athletes who come together to discuss Biblical principles and how to incorporate those principles in everyday life.
