Promoted to Editorial Page Editor in a time of industry downturn and deep personnel cuts to department. Managed to grow the paper’s opinion content to include more diverse voices, and move the pages away from solely concentrating on political intrigue, to issues and policies that affected everyday readers.
Wrote award-winning and insightful institutional editorials, and signed columns (roughly 4-7 pieces per week) that helped to better illuminate a myriad of issues and governmental policies impacting North Jersey, reflecting the paper’s long-term editorial commitments to civil rights, the environment, transportation and health care.
Managed the production side of Opinion content, including soliciting op-ed contributors, engaging with local and statewide stakeholders, and recruiting, organizing and editing letters to the editor. Collaborated with page designers and digital producers to formulate the layouts and presentation that best suited daily content as well as the 4-page Sunday section.

Wore almost every hat there is to wear in the daily operations of Opinion sections of The Star, long known as a newspaper of courage and reform in the Deep South. Wrote 3-5 editorials and/or signed columns per week, edited letters, op-ed contributions.
Edited Book Page, including soliciting reviewers, from local academics, writers, and policy experts, to develop a stable of contributors to keep section relevant, with a local bent. Pushed to include books written by Alabama authors, and supported local, independent publishers.
Wrote occasional book reviews and long-term essays that covered topical or seasonal events, such as a yearly “Baseball Books section,” and a “Veterans Day,” section that I edited, and included a survey of both new works and classics of the genre.
