Position: Faculty – Apprenticeship Training (Electrical)

In the late fall of 2018, a short-term training position became opened at Burridge Campus to facilitate the training of a 2nd and 3rd level electrical apprenticeship blocks. Using the NSAA curriculum, I delivered a nine-week program for the 2nd year group and a seven-week program for the 3rd level group. Mainly theory was delivered in these two courses, however, even with limited facilities, I was able to mix in some lab sessions in order to enhance the training environment. Comprehensive testing was carried out to ensure that all candidates met the outcomes of the short programs and the 2nd level group was prepared for a NSAA block exam at the end of their program.

Position: Faculty – Apprenticeship Training (Electrical)

After completing a short-term contract in August 2018 at Akerley campus, delivering a Motor Control Training course, I was approached by the Academic Chair at Akerley Campus to see if I was interested in facilitating a 2nd year Electrical Apprenticeship Block training. A high number of apprentices required training that fall, so an additional, experienced trainer was required. Working in conjunction with two instructors at Ivany campus, the three instructors delivered the first 2nd year Harmonized Electrical Block training here in Nova Scotia for three separate groups of trainees.

Nova Scotia Community College – Akerley Campus

Position: Industrial Trades Instructor – Military Contract Training

For the second time in 2 years, I took on a contract position training military-personnel from CFB Gagetown, at Akerley Campus facility. This Electrical Distribution training (ED Tech) was identical to the program that was run the previous year, training an overflow group from Gagetown. Using the military training format given to the college, an intense 5-month core electrical program was administered to the group to prepare them for deployment to various bases across Canada.

July 2017 to January 2018

Over this 7-month period I worked two short term positions with the IBEW for approximately 8 weeks. As well, during this period, I volunteered at the IBEW facility to help construct equipment for the new training facility.

December 2016 to June 2017 Nova Scotia Community College – Akerley Campus

Position: Industrial Trades Instructor – Military Contract Training

During this six-month period at NSCC, I was involved in the training of the overflow group of military-personnel from CFB Gagetown. This Electrical Distribution class was given an intense training regime in electrical power systems utilized in the various bases here in Canada. Everything from basic electrical theory, electrical safety, wiring methods, Canadian Electrical Code, pipe bending, motor control, intro to fire alarm systems and maintenance, was delivered during this 22-week period.

Position: Industrial Trades Instructor – Irving Shipbuilding Program

In the position as the Electrical Trades Trainer for the Irving Shipbuilding program

at the NSCC, I was tasked to set up the curriculum for the new program and then deliver this material to the selected candidates from the ISI facility. The goal of the program was to introduce a new production system to the ISI employee’s, so that an overall increase in

quality, speed and safety, in the production of the AOPS could be achieved.

Installation of piping systems, pulling wire, installing light fixtures, wiring exhaust fans were just a few of the tasks that I was involved with during my employment period with Dawco.

For the year working with URS Flint, I was employed in the positions of lead hand or foreman for the various projects that URS Flint had at the Lloydminster Refinery and the Lloydminster Upgrader. URS Flint, being the prime E&I contractor for both facilities, supplied manpower for pre-turnaround projects and manpower for the shutdowns at both plants during this period. Projects that I was involved with during that 12-month period were:

Installation of the extended essential bus in the new steam plant building at the Lloydminster refinery.

Rewiring of motor control systems at the Lloydminster refinery.

Installation of piping systems at both Lloydminster refinery and Upgrader plants.

Installation of heat trace systems at the Lloydminster Upgrader.

Complete rewiring of the instrument package of the air module for the hydrogen furnace at the Lloydminster Upgrader.

Installation of fireproof cable for ESD switching on critical valves.

Completion of the diesel and bio diesel loading system.

Complete wiring upgrade of the Hydrogen furnace at the Lloydminster Upgrader

The scope of the work with the “ISCT” electrical walk-down team at the Kearl Lake facility was verification of plant systems and sub-systems. Compiling punch list items for the contractor and when completed, sign off any approved systems, which were then handed off to the commissioning team. Essentially this was pre-inspection work.

As you can see from my personal resume, I hold several qualifications in the Electrical trade, these include an Electrical Construction Red Seal, an Electrical Mechanic Certification, a Communications Cabling Specialist and a Federal Government Marine Electrical Certification. Complimenting these certificates is the years of experience and the wealth of knowledge that I have gained in the various positions that I have held.

For numerous years, in various capacities, I have been involved in building maintenance, albeit, mainly concentrating on the electrical end of the maintenance programs. With my time in the electrical trade I have had to become familiar with other systems, mainly due to the tie in with electrical systems. Heating, plumbing, Air conditioning, water treatment systems, fire alarm, communication systems are just a few of the systems that I have had direct contact with while working on building maintenance or installation.

I am very comfortable working on computer systems and have worked with numerous Microsoft programs. Over the years, whether it be in the field, office or classroom, I have become very adept at scheduling activities for successful and timely completion of various tasks.
